Newsletter #1 - March 2016

Dear colleague,
Welcome to this inaugural Newsletter of the EU Horizon 2020 project "REDMUD", which stands for the European Training Network for Zero-Waste Valorisation of Bauxite Residue (red mud). This Newsletter will inform you about breakthrough results, publications, projects, events... with respect to red mud valorisation. We hope it leads to novel co-operations and we are always open for suggestions. (Lucian Onisei, Dissemination Manager MSCA-ETN REDMUD)

Announcement REDMUD Summer School
On 29-31 August 2016 a unique Summer School will take place in Leuven, Belgium. The aim of this Summer School is to bring PhD students and postdocs together to learn and discuss about the production of aluminium and the zero-waste valorisation of bauxite residue (red mud). The summer school consists of 12 lectures, which are provided by world class experts. The REDMUD Summer School is co-organised by the RARE3 KU Leuven Cluster (Industrial Research Fund Knowledge Platform on rare earth recycling and other critical metals). More details about the programme content and the registration procedure can be found on the REDMUD Summer School website.

REDMUD is the European Training Network for Zero-Waste Valorisation of Bauxite Residue, which targets the vast streams of both new and landfilled/stockpiled red mud in the EU-28. REDMUD trains 15 young researchers in the science and technology of bauxite residue zero-waste valorisation, with emphasis on the recovery of iron, aluminium, titianium and the rare earths (incl. scandium) while valorising the residuals into building materials. Concurrently, REDMUD trains the researchers in diverse soft skills.

On 16 February 2016 Helsinki was the venue for the formal kick-off meeting of the EU H2020 METGROW+ project. METGROW+ is one of the two Horizon 2020 projects answering the call “new metallurgical systems” (SC5-11E). Within this project, both primary and secondary materials are studied as potential critical metal resources. The project is coordinated by VTT (Finland) and also involves REDMUD coordinator KU Leuven.

All papers from the Proceedings of the first Bauxite Residue Valorisation and Best Practices Conference (Leuven, 5-7 October 2015) are available here.
The Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy will publish a Special Issue on Bauxite Residue Valorisation, based on papers from the Bauxite Residue Valorisation and Best Practices Conference (Leuven, 5-7 October 2015).
Policy Brief on the ERECON Report
In 2013 the European Rare Earths Competency Network (ERECON) was set up by the European Commission. Its final report was released in June 2015. In the framework of the EREAN project, a Policy Brief, providing a summary of ERECON’s recycling recommendations, has been published. Considering the presence of rare earths (scandium in particular) in bauxite residue this Policy Brief and the ERECON report are also very relevant for MSCA-ETN REDMUD.
Special Issue on ELFM in Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy
Following the successful Third Enhanced Landfill Mining Symposium in Lisbon (February 2016) it has been decided that there will be a Special Issue on Enhanced Landfill Mining (ELFM) in the Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy. Papers should cover ELFM of mono-landfills containing mining waste (tailings) and industrial residues, such as red mud, goethite sludge, phosphogypsum, metallurgical slags etc. All details about scope and deadlines can be found here.
