President's Update

Dear MRSA Colleagues,

It is significant to note that May is a month of rebirth and rejuvenation and thus, we celebrate our mothers who gave us life and inspiration. It takes a village to raise a child, and never have these words been more true. Thank you to all the mothers, grandmothers, aunties, sisters, daughters, and significant women who have been instrumental in our lives as we negotiate caregiving to children, parents and loved ones during this ongoing pandemic. Blessings to you all.

May is a busy month and there is lots to update you on...….

Getting vaccinated during working hours

Mount Royal encourages all employees to get vaccinated as protection against COVID-19 when they become eligible. If appointments are required during regular working hours, please work with your manager. MRSA members will have access to three hours of paid leave (for each vaccination) if needed, under Bill 71. You will not be required to put this medical appointment time on your timesheet as it is time separate from other paid leave types.

Credit Course Tuition Application

The application period for Credit Course Tuition has changed!!

Please submit your applications May 1 - May 31 to apply for up to $500 of tuition reimbursement for a credit course at an accredited post-secondary institution. Download the application and email your completed form to mrsa@mtroyal.ca. Electronic signatures will be accepted. Contact prodev@mtroyal.ca with any questions. All HR forms can be found on MyMRU under Employee/Human Resources/HR Toolkit

PD Days

Your MRSA PD Committee has done an exceptional job of offering an outstanding PD Event this year. Due to the ongoing pandemic, it isn't possible to offer a full day of virtual professional/personal development. Instead, this "day" will be offered over several days extending over two weeks (May 11 - 13 and May 18 - 20). Registrations opened May 3 so please take a look at the options for sessions and speak with your supervisor about the timing of the sessions you would like to attend. Again, you are not expected to attend every session, but please participate in any that may have relevance for you. These sessions cover professional, health, financial, cultural and fun interests and some are offered over multiple times. As we have in past years, I have asked for the support of upper administration for the release time for this event which is supported financially through the University.

MRSA members will be given priority for registration. In the spirit of staying connected, we invite Exempt Staff to participate in this event as well. Links to register were sent to members via email communication on April 29. These registration links can also be found on the MRSA website.

Many thanks to Courtney Montgomery, Amy McCarthy, Charissa Hovdebo, Lucia Trischuk, Pam Karlenzig, Sharmila Ranabhat, and Tara Grams for your incredible work on this event that I'm sure we'll be talking about for years to come.

MRSA Labour Relations Officer

As you are reading this newsletter, we are preparing to interview candidates for the MRSA Labour Relations Officer. We are pleased and excited with the pool of applicants we received and look forward to updating you on the successful candidate for this position in next month's newsletter.

General Elections

The nominations are in! Through acclamation, we have a new two-year term VP (Rona Reitsema), three two-year term Directors-at-Large (Cyndi Cave, Judith Tarko, Heather Evans), two one-year term Directors-at-Large (Jessica Pickering, Crystal Koch), two two-year term EDT committee members (Claire Grant, and Debbie Mork) and two one-year term EDT committee members (Stacey Anderson and Jessica Lee Wah). We did not fill the one-year term VP (currently filled by Crystal Koch), nor our Director-at-Large, EDI position but we will continue to recruit for appointments as per our Elections Policy.

Since these positions were filled by acclamation, no election will be held. Congratulations to our acclaimed Executive and committee members and welcome to Rona, Cyndi, Jessica and Stacey!

General Meeting*

Please join us on May 19 (10:45 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.) for our General Meeting, as this provides an opportunity to come together as an MRSA community. Meet your MRSA Executive and review the 2021/2022 Budget. We welcome any general operational questions and feedback from our membership.

*Please note that the GM will be running at the same time as one of the PD sessions ("Resilience in the Face of Change; Lessons from Grief and Loss"). We will be recording the GM for for later viewing.

Reminder
- Please ensure you are working with your supervisor to arrange for any 2019 accrued vacation time that must be used up by June 30.
- Please DO NOT come to campus if you are exhibiting any COVID like symptoms as per AHS guidelines.

It's a busy month so stay healthy everyone!

Treasurer's Report

The draft 2021-22 budget will be presented to the Executive for approval on Wednesday May 5th. Thanks to everyone who has participated in the process. We look forward to presenting the approved budget to the membership at the General Meeting in May.

Johanna from the Audit and Finance committee continues to work with our accountants to establish a CRA Business Number. In having a CRA Business Number, the Association can take advantage of any government programs.

Mariberth from the Audit and Finance committee continues to work on a  Purchasing/Procurement Policy. A draft policy has been created using information from other universities. Procedures will need to  be put in place to operationalize the policy.

Some funding has been approved by the MRSA Executive to pay for a contractor to make changes to the EDT database in order to streamline processes for both the applicants and for the EDT committee.  The migration of the EDT database to MyMRU is in its final stages.

Audit and Finance has been working closely with the PD committee to standardize the service provider agreements for the amazing array of guest speakers lined up for PD days next week. Changes included the inclusion of a PIPA clause to project members’ personal information and some standard practices for speaker deposits.

Submitted by Craig Baskett on behalf of the Audit and Finance committee - Michelle LogulloMariberth Blanco, Johanna Franconeri, Nadine Conklin.

Social Committee

We hope you’re excited for some fun activities this month.  We hope you’ll join us in one or all of them. All Social Committee events and activities are open to MRSA Members.

Upcoming Social Committee Activities

Talent Show on May 27, 2021 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.

We hope you have been thinking about what talent you can share live at the Google Meet or via video submission. Members will be voting for first, second and third place prizes of $150.00, $100.00 and $50.00 e-gift cards respectively (Tim Hortons, Starbucks or Amazon).

Now that you’ve seen the prize amounts, are you considering a talent you have?  It can be anything from poetry, cocktail making (like in the movie Cocktail), magic show, pet tricks, baking or decorating, a physical skill, etc. If you consider it a talent, then so do we! Show us what you’ve got; you have a couple more weeks to fine tune your skill or even learn something new to share with us. We can’t wait for the show!

By participating in the talent show either LIVE or via video submission you give us permission to share the recordings with the MRSA Membership for voting purposes.  Videos must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on May 25, 2021 to mrsasocial@mtroyal.ca. Live performances will be recorded during the Google Meet on May 27th 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.  All performances will be sent out to the membership for voting on May 28 - May 31.  If we do not have enough participants sign-up this contest will either be postponed or cancelled by the Social Committee.

Positive Notes Campaign - Month of May 2021

Since our Positive Notes Campaign was so successful in February, we have decided to do it again.  This time we will leave the submission form open for the entire month of May and messages will be sent out to the recipients throughout the month as the Social Committee has time rather than all at once. If you would like to send a positive or uplifting message to a colleague at MRU, please fill in this Positive Notes Form anytime during the month of May. Each person who sends a message or messages will have one entry into a draw at the end of the month.  3 winners will be randomly drawn for a Floral Bouquet worth $50.00 to be sent to them in June.
