President's Update

Dear MRSA Colleagues,

I'm hoping you all had a restful break over the Easter weekend and had some time to decompress. With spring and vaccines on the horizon, better days are in front of us so chins up, we can do this!

I've got soooo much to say, so let's jump to it.

The Loudest Silence - SAMRU Event

On March 18, I had the privilege of attending "The Loudest Silence: Anti-Racism Commemoration Open Mic". A number of SAMRU participants shared with the audience their personal experiences of racism and marginalization. For me, it was a very emotional event which resonated on a very personal level. These brave students let us into their hearts and souls to convey the impact of both overt and covert behaviours of others they face in the world every day. They shared how they "cope" and find strength through bead working, art, music, poetry and storytelling. I encourage you to take some time to watch the recording and reflect on what each of us can do to make changes and be more inclusive and mindful.

Thanks to Spirit River and his team for putting together such an amazing event.

4 Seasons of Reconciliation

On the heels of The Loudest Silence, we received the following Comms Update on March 22, which provides a call to action and affect change within ourselves. This is only a three hour commitment and provides both a professional and personal development opportunity for you to consider:

"At Mount Royal, we are launching 4 Seasons of Reconciliation coincident with the spring equinox, a time of rebirth and hope. To enrol, please add your name and MRU email address to this Google sheet. Then, you’ll receive an email from welcoming you to the course. To find out more in the meantime, please visit here.

4 Seasons of Reconciliation is a series of bilingual online resources, which promote a renewed relationship between Indigenous Peoples and Canadians, through transformative and engaging learning towards anti-racism education. This initiative assists the workplace and education organizations to provide diversity and inclusion awareness through self-paced online courses featuring award-winning films, slideshows, videos, quizzes and a completion certificate provided by First Nations University of Canada."

Professional and Personal (PD) Days - SAVE THE DATE!!

Not to let COVID have the upper hand, our amazing PD Committee has put together a series of workshops over several days for you to attend. Since we are in a virtual world that doesn't provide the opportunity  to gather for a full day in person, we will be offering PD sessions over the weeks of May 11 - 13 and May 18 - 20. There are some awesome workshops/sessions being offered in physical and mental health, finances, cultural awareness, time management and fun games too. We hope to have details and registration available shortly, but be sure to save the dates in the meantime.

The MRSA PD Committee will be seeking expressions of interest from staff and students who have a unique perspective to share with the MRSA community. We will be hosting a session where we celebrate the diversity of our community and hear short stories from members and students. We believe this is an opportunity for connection, to learn from each other, and to give space for us all to explore the ways that “you belong here” at MRU. Submissions from members of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities are encouraged, however all submissions will be considered. Please email the PD Planning Committee if you are interested.

Vacation Carry Over Notifications

Some of you will have received reminder notifications for using up your vacation carryover from 2019. Please be advised that this is what time was earned and not taken from Jan. 1, 2019 - Dec. 30, 2019. You must make arrangements to use up this time prior to June 30, 2021 as per our MoA for Extension to Accrued Vacation Carryover. If you have questions, please contact us.

Special General Meeting (SGM)

Thanks to those who were able to attend our SGM on March 24. The Governance Committee presented four amendments to the Constitution for membership approval. Voting opened March 25 - 31 to allow time to capture the most accurate numbers of dues paying members at the time of voting. Final results indicated that 437 (60.1%) of 727 electors voted in this ballot and we received overwhelming support for all four of the amendments. Thanks again for your engagement and support in moving our association forward.

 Campus Closure May 21

Those that are not able to work on campus due to the campus closure and are not able to work remotely will not be required to use vacation/accrued time to cover the day. This will be a regular paid day.

Abolishment Update

Sadly, three of our members in Events and Theatre Services were abolished in March. This was largely due to COVID and budgetary reasons. We hope there will be opportunities available to them in the near future as COVID restrictions are eased.

Collective Bargaining

We commenced collective bargaining on March 17. No updates to report at this time as we are only in the initial stages of meeting.

It's that time of the year again! A reminder that nominations for available positions on our MRSA Executive Board and EDT Committee will open on April 16. We'll send more information shortly but wanted to give you all some time to consider these awesome opportunities.

Continue to take care of yourselves and others!!

Treasurer's Report

After review, the Audit and Finance Committee has recommended the Association stay with our current fiscal year (July 1 to June 30th), as opposed to aligning with the new Mount Royal fiscal year (April 1 to March 31st).

The Audit and Finance Committee continues with the work to develop the 2021-22 budget. The hope is to present it to the executive committee in mid April for review and approval. It will be presented to the membership at the May AGM.

Johanna from Audit and Finance is going to pursue getting MRSA a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) business number as recommended by our external auditor.

Mariberth from Audit and Finance is working on developing a purchasing and procurement policy and procedure to present to the Executive.

As Treasurer, I will be attending EDT committee meetings once per month in an ex-officio role and reporting back to the Executive. The good work the committee members: Debbie, Jessica, Jody, Katie and Stacey, are doing each and every week is truly remarkable.

Quote for the Month -

“A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore. --Yogi Berra”

Submitted by Craig Baskett on behalf of the Audit and Finance committee - Michelle LogulloMariberth Blanco, Johanna Franconeri, Nadine Conklin.

Events and Activities

Social Committee

We hope you’re excited, we have a lot of fun activities coming this month and over the next few months.  We hope you’ll join us in one or all of them.

 Upcoming Social Committee Activities

1.   Games Lunch - April 15 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.

Join us in this Google Meet to play some games at lunch.  It’s a lot of fun.  Depending how many people come to join us, we’ll be playing skribbl (which is like a virtual pictionary) and/or Codenames. To give you an idea of how this game is played, here are the quick rules:  Two teams (red & blue) compete by each having a ‘spymaster’ give one-word clues that can point to multiple words on the board.  The other players on the team attempt to guess their team’s words while avoiding the words of the other team and avoiding the assassin.  There are 25 Codename cards laid out in a grid in random order. Some are red agents, some blue and one assassin.  The others are innocent bystanders.  If your team accidentally guesses the assassin, then your team loses the game. Read rules here. Watch a quick instructional video here

2.   Pet Photo/Video Contest - Due: Thursday April 22, 2021

Open to all MRSA Members.  If you would like to submit a photo or video of your pet, please do so prior to 4:30 p.m. on Apr. 22, 2021; email it to There will be three categories; please tell us which category you would like your entry submitted into.

                     1.Cutest pet;
                     2.Funniest pet; or
                     3.Your pet looks like you.

Photos and videos will be sent to the MRSA Membership via a link to a google drive folder for voting purposes.  By submitting a photo/video you give us permission to share these with the MRSA Membership.  If you are submitting a video, please try to keep your videos short, so that they are easy to email and upload.

Voting will take place April 23 until 4:30 p.m. on April 26.  The winners will be notified on April 27.  Winners will need to notify Christine Pepper of which e-gift card they would like.  Prizes are one $50.00 e-gift card for each category (Tim Hortons, Starbucks or Amazon).

  1. April Crossword Puzzle - Due April 30, 2021

We hope you’ll try our spring crossword puzzle; open to all MRSA Members.  Make a copy of the crossword puzzle from this LINK.  Complete the puzzle by April 30, 2021 and make sure to share it with Charissa Hovdebo,  By sharing a puzzle with all correct answers, you will be entered into a draw for a $20.00 e-gift card (Tim Hortons, Starbucks or Amazon).  The winner will be notified the first week in May and will need to inform Christine Pepper of which e-gift card they would like by Friday, May 7, 2021.

  1. Talent Show Sign-Up by May 25, 2021

Talent Show on May 27, 2021 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.

We hope you have been thinking about what talent you can share live at the Google Meet or via video submission. Members will be voting for first, second and third place prizes of $150.00, $100.00 and $50.00 e-gift cards respectively (Tim Hortons, Starbucks or Amazon). Now that you’ve seen the prize amounts, are you considering a talent you have?  It can be anything from poetry, cocktail making (like in the movie Cocktail), magic show, pet tricks, unicycle riding, a physical skill, etc. If you consider it a talent, then so do we! Show us what you’ve got; you have almost two months to hone your skill or even learn something new to share with us. We can’t wait for the show!  By participating in the talent show either LIVE or via video submission you give us permission to share the recordings with the MRSA Membership for voting purposes.  More information about submitting a video coming in the May newsletter.
