Full Circle

Time seems to have flown by this year as I approach the end of my VISTA service year with CAFN! As a great sage once said, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

Here's what you’ll find in our August newsletter:
Our second Progress Meeting of the year, CAFN's new Board of Directors, catch CAFN out & about, info on CAFN's session at the Closing the Hunger Gap conference happening in Raleigh Sept 3-5, and lots of food system events and resources.
Being an AmeriCorps VISTA with CAFN this past year has been a whirlwind experience - I have learned so much from you all, and am so honored to have been a part of this food council. I'm excited to follow this food systems path I've found myself on, and am deeply thankful for this first step! Keep an eye out for our September newsletter where we'll introduce our new VISTA member - the circle continues. :)

RSVP for our 2nd Progress Meeting of 2019!

CAFN Has a New Board of Directors!

CAFN members sent in nominations and the Coordinating Circle voted to elect new our Board members just last week - phew! Please welcome our new CAFN Board of Directors:
Anya Gordon has been involved in the food system with her husband Arthur, operating the Irregardless Cafe and The Well Fed Community Garden. She participated on the Task Force that formed Capital Area Food Network, and is a member of the Center for Environmental Farming Systems Board, the City of Raleigh's Environmental Advisory Board and supports Wake County's Urban Agriculture Collective. She is also a member of CAFN's Coordinating Circle.
Gideon Adams is the Food Bank’s Vice President for Community Health and Engagement. Gideon's transformative experiences seeing hunger firsthand moved him to get involved with the fight against this insidious threat. Prior to his work with food banks, he held operational and project roles in the private sector. He is also a member of CAFN's Food Recovery and Coordinating Circles.

As a multifaceted leader with expertise on key issues related to public health, education, and community development, Dr. Monique Bethell has developed innovative efforts to promote academic success, health and racial equity and strategies for building healthy communities. Dr. Bethell holds a B.B.A., two Master's degrees, a Ph.D. and an M.P.H. She is also a member of CAFN's Food Access and Security Circle.

Ruthie Wofford is the Community Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator at Alliance Medical Ministry. She moved to Raleigh in 2017 to become Capital Area Food Network’s first AmeriCorps VISTA member. Beforehand, she worked with Hunger Solutions Institute and local food pantries in Auburn, AL while obtaining her B.A. from Auburn University. She is currently working towards an MPA from UNC. Ruthie is also part of CAFN's Coordinating Circle.
A native of North Carolina, Erin White is a designer, entrepreneur, and teacher working for healthy food systems. Erin built Community Food Lab as a hybrid model in the intersection between design, consulting, and social entrepreneurship to explore food systems design. He is a founding member of CAFN, and a former board member of Advocates for Health in Action. Erin is also a part of CAFN's Coordinating Circle.

Our very own Sydney Klein will be presenting on CAFN, our Senior Hunger Voices video campaign, our Food Security Plan and more at Transfer Co. Food Hall on August 10 as part of the Second Saturday series. Come say hi!

CAFN to Co-Present Session at 2019 Closing the Hunger Gap Conference

CAFN is joining Alamance Food CollaborativeCEFS CORE and Community Food Strategies to co-present an interactive panel and discussion session exploring racial equity in food policy councils at the September 3-5th Closing the Hunger Gap Conference! We'll also be helping out with the pre-conference tours, and we'd love to see you there! There are volunteer and discount cost opportunities available.
Centering Racial Equity in Food Policy Councils: Progress, Pitfalls, Possibilities 
Using story and dialogue, two food councils will share their early-stage process to center racial equity. Presenters will have a moderated discussion, engaging the audience, to share insights, ideas, and useful tools for moving this work forward in service to better outcomes for our neighbors and communities.

Healthy Cooking on a Budget
CAFN member and Expanded Food and Nutrition Program Educator Paula Norris will be leading healthy and affordable cooking classes using fresh, local food for the public at Moore Square Park this summer - share with your networks!  

Classes run Wednesday afternoons August 7th through September 11th from 4:30 - 6 pm.

Racial Equity Conversation Circle

CAFN is starting a conversation group around racial equity and the food system. Its goal will be to build a shared understanding within CAFN, and help us discover how we can bake the principles of racial equity into our identity and our work as a food council.

Summer Food is still going on through August 7th - share with your networks!

The Wake County Summer Food Team has been extremely impressed by the high attendance and engaging programming at meal sites this year! Let's end on a high note and share this resource with more Wake County residents.

The Summer Food Program is open through August 7th to any child 18 and under, no matter their income. Click here to see the list of Open Food Sites in the county!

Wake County Farmers Markets Accepting SNAP!

EBT cardholders can get twice the value for their food dollars at participating Wake County farmer's markets! The amount spent will be doubled, or matched, at the State, Moore Square, Zebulon, Western Wake and Apex farmer's markets. Get more fresh, local food for a great price!
