President's Message

When wondering where I would find the time to write a president's report, I began thinking about everything all members put into their days and the importance to “Stop and just breathe”.
Since I became President, Jo Wittorff has become Area 3 Director (that is a busy job), we have sent out grants to worthy recipients, had a breast cushion stuffing afternoon, Lola and Di attended a Soroptimist meeting as guest speakers, Barbara Delves turned 80, Jan and Beth return from Convention, we received a Bronze award for new memberships in the past biennium, have held our YWPA awards and not to mention newsletters, banking, minute taking and all the other background work that goes into making our Club work.
I am proud of all our members. We advocate, give service, we share friendships and all work hard for what we believe in.
Taking care of yourself first is not self-indulgent; we need to do this to be helpful to others.
Look after yourself.
Kimberley Robbins, President

Service and UN Committee

Chairman Linda Brown

YWPA Award

The Service Committee has been very busy, assessing applications, interviewing finalists and  hosting another successful Young Women in Public Affairs dinner. The winner was Eliza Lyon from Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School. Many thanks to Leonie Davey, coordinator of the Award, and her fellow judges Helen Hemsley and Jenni Smith.

Literacy Week was early in September. This year the club donated 26 "book bags" (with an appropriate book) to the Carey Park Child and Parent Centre. The Centre will use them as part of their lending library for the Playgroup. The Centre includes multicultural families (65%) and at risk families (90%) and runs playgroups for up to 20 children, teaching parents about literacy and how to "read" to their child. Lynette Wynne and Di Tate attended one of the playgroup sessions to represent our club.
The Club's nomination for Woman of Achievement Award is completed (thank you to Ingrid Hilario and Amanda Whittle).  Our nominee is Brenda Dawes who was our  guest speaker at the last meeting. Her involvement in community service activities, including the "Days for Girls" project has made her a worthy nomination. The Service Committee has also been collecting books for a library that Brenda is establishing in Papua New Guinea.

Advocacy Committee

Chairman Tyril Houghton
White Ribbon Day                                                                                                           Materials for white ribbons were delivered by Lee Mead to Trudy Turner at Ocean Star Hostel and to Jobs South West. Partnering with these agencies spreads the word about the role of Zonta. Di Tate spoke at Jobs South West and explained the purpose of the white ribbons to a class of twelve.

Respect Stickers
Brunswick Resource Centre now has signs on the back of every toilet door.
After discussion with Tania Jackson (Harvey Shire President), Harvey Shire Health Officer Scott Dandridge is being approached to find the best way of moving forward with this project.
It is anticipated that the project will take some time to implement.

Homelessness
Lee Mead attended the Homeless Forum in Bunbury. Seventy people attended and discussed the needs to be met and existing  agencies in Bunbury.
More information is required before we can identify where our assistance would be most effective.
Some known providers in Bunbury currently delivering services are:-
Accord West and Bunyap -  youth 15 – 18 years
St John of God Hospital  – Horizon House -  young men 15 to 24 years old.
South West Women's Refuge -  Women and children in crisis.

Membership & Program Committee

Chairman Jill Lynn
July Guest speakers - Delegate's & Alternate's Convention Report
Jan Greive and Beth Trainer  both entertained and informed us of their experiences while overseas. They obviously enjoyed the hospitality of Polish Zontians and a tour of parts of Poland including Wroclaw where there are now over 300 brass gnomes, a symbol of the Polish Resistance during WW11.
On a more serious note, Jan spoke of the wonderful opportunity to attend the Convention on behalf of the Zonta Club of Bunbury, to vote on the club’s behalf, listen to awe-inspiring international keynote speakers and to experience the reinforcement that Zonta is a global organisation and a powerful group.

August Guest Speakers
As the culmination of the Service Committee project for Young Women in Public Affairs, the four finalists chosen for this award were guest speakers at the August meeting.

In appreciation of their coordination of our club’s  2016 Woman of Achievement award nomination Rose Awards were presented to Ingrid Hilario and Amanda Whittle in August.

Book Market for ZIF
Our September meeting featured a Book Swap to raise funds for the Zonta International Foundation (ZIF). Our club was recognised at Convention for 100% of our members donating as individuals. We're aiming to do it again this Biennium.

Finance & Fundraising Committee

Chairman Diane Tate

The most recent function was the annual Quiz Morning (images above) held on Thursday 15th September at the Bunbury Bowling Club. Approximately 100 guests enjoyed a morning of fun, frivolity, brain storming and hilarious jokes told by our remarkable MC, Nan Martella.
Members  made sure the refreshments, provided by our Zontians, were ample and delicious with coffee and tea warming the guests after a crisp start to the day. President Elect, Beth Talbot addressed the audience on project information,  Breast Cushions and the Birthing Kit Assembly Day to be held on Saturday 12th November. This announcement culminated in $36.00 being donated specifically for the Birthing Kits.
A total of $2,333.75 profit was raised, an excellent result.

Future Events
Our next fundraising event will be Music in the Park, Sunday 22nd January 2017 at Evedon Park Burekup from 4pm onwards. This is a popular event combining music, wine, gourmet platters and a delicious sausage sizzle. Zontians, friends and family enjoy the park setting and the opportunity to relax and socialise with one another. The event is open to the public.
The annual International Women’s Day Breakfast is scheduled for Sunday 12th March 2017. The venue is the Sanctuary Golf Resort. The information is listed on our website under “events” with updates posted regularly.

Entertainment Books update: We raised $754.00 this year from the sale of the 2016-2017 Entertainment Book.

I would like to thank the hard working, generous, committed and passionate members of a great team of Finance & Fundraising “movers and shakers”.

PR and Communications Committee

Chairman Sue Kerr
Our PR and Communications Committee has been focusing on providing communication tools that keep members informed, attract new members and showcase Zonta to the wider community. So far we have distributed a club calendar of events to enable our members to place important dates in their diaries, some business cards that members can handout to prospective members and some brochures that members can share with those who want to know more about the Zonta Club of Bunbury.

However the archives side of our committee is our biggest task at the moment as we plan the 30th anniversary club booklet. In the survey to find out what we should include in the booklet, members indicated that they wanted lots of photographs, anecdotes and good feel stories.

Public Website Versus "My Zonta"

The new www.zonta.org website has a public part and it has a “My Zonta” part, where you enter in your own non-public Zonta space with your member user ID and password.  At the top of the Homepage, you must first click on "My Zonta". This takes you to the "Member Login" (see left of above image) Your Login is first name + member ID# and your password is zonta + member ID# (all lower case).
Members are requested to update any changes to their profile (e.g., new address, phone # or email etc) in “My Zonta”. Treasurer Carol Downe has a copy of your member ID number if you don’t know it and it is also on the label that comes with your copy of the Zontian magazine.
