40 years a Zontian!

Zonta Club of Bunbury members dressed in red for their 19th April meeting to celebrate the ‘Ruby’ anniversary of club member Ellen Cox (pictured above), who reached the milestone of 40 years of Zonta International membership.
Ellen first joined Zonta as a member of the Zonta Club of Perth in 1976 and transferred to Bunbury Zonta in 1992, when she and her husband Tom moved to live on her family farm in Cookernup, near Harvey.
Ellen is held in high esteem by Bunbury club members. She has been a wonderful mentor to club and district Zontians and has held positions at all levels of Zonta, serving as the Zonta Club of Bunbury’s President from 1995 to 1997. Past District 23 Governor Alison Martin and Ellen's sister Daphne joined Bunbury Club members’ celebrations and cards and messages from Zontians who couldn't attend made it a special evening for Ellen.
Many thanks to the Membership Committee for organising a such fantastic celebration for Ellen, including 'Ellen placemats' (thanks to Karen Mazzella) and 40th cupcakes (thanks to Jill Lynn).  Click here to view more images of Ellen's 40th.
Final message from outgoing Club President Sue Kerr....

As I near the end of my second term serving as your President I want to express my gratitude for the confidence you placed in me to lead our club. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to serve in this role as we work to further the Zonta goals in our community, our nation and our world.

I am feeling very confident that our club will go from strength to strength under the leadership of our new club President, Kimberley Robbins. Thank you to all the members for your support over the last two years .........

Response from WA's Attorney General

In January, 2016, a response from the Attorney General informed the club that the need to link the various State data systems to track perpetrators of Domestic Violence was taken to COAG, (Commonwealth of Australian Governments). Having the data systems linked will achieve the desired outcome to track perpetrators as they move interstate.
For more information on National initiatives, here is a link to the COAG paper on national changes to address Domestic Violence agreed at the meeting held 23 July 2015. COAG Communique

Future Advocacy Focus

After its successful first year as a separate committee, advocacy members have been planning the future focus of their Committee.

Funding Applications for Local Projects

When our Round 1 applications for local funding closed on April 27th, there were 12 organisations that had applied for funding for particular projects, the most we have ever had.
At their May meeting, Board members had a busy time assessing applications and selecting which ones they would recommend to receive grants. We look forward to putting the Board's recommendations to a vote at our May club meeting.

Jane M Klausman Women in Business Scholarship

The original deadline for applications was incorrect - applications (access form here) are due on Monday 16th May. Please spread the word if you know someone who is applying.

Membership & Program Committee

April Guest Speaker

Lyn Farrell, Dean of Edith Cowan University in Bunbury, was guest speaker at our April meeting.
Lyn spoke about The Rural, Remote and Regional Women’s Network of Western Australia which was formed 20 years ago when many communities were in crisis. The network aims to recognise, promote and expand the contribution women make to their communities. Lyn is a member of the Network’s Reference Group – 12 regionally based women appointed by the Minister for Regional Development with a mix of skills and origin.

Finance & Fundraising Committee

Members celebrate: Finance and Fundraising Committee members held their end of Zonta year celebratory dinner at Vittoria's Restaurant at the Sanctuary Golf Resort at the end of April. The +1 is Jo Wittorff who is not strictly on this committee but was invited along because she works closely with this team in her PR&C role. Fortunately a few of the Zontians had their Entertainment Book card with them and a sizeable discount was received!

Unbelievable Support!

We acknowledge and thank 10 wonderful women who couldn't make it to our International Women's Day Breakfast this year, but held a get together themselves at a later date, and subsequently presented club member Sue Piacentini with $200,00 to add to our IWDB fundraising account.
Many thanks to Val Pigott and friends - Judy, Jill, Pia, Laraine, Carmel, Robin, Josie, Elizabeth and Sue. What fantastic support!

Area & District News

Vale Bobbie Craig (formerly Porter)

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Past District 23 Governor Bobbie Craig on the 4th May as the result of a heart attack. She had only just had her 93rd birthday.
Bobbie was Vice Area 6 Director when our club was chartered in 1988 and she installed our first Board.
She served as Governor of District 23 from 1992-1994, with PDG Alison Martin as her Secretary. Alison writes, “Bobbie was a gracious lady, so thoughtful, kind and generous. For the last six months she enjoyed living at the wonderful Bethanie Wearne Hostel in Cottesloe, where her room overlooked windsurfers, dog walkers and lovely sunsets at the beach."
Our condolences to Bobbie’s family and close friends. Thank you to Ellen for representing our club at Bobbie's funeral on Tuesday 10th May.

Area Workshop - 30th April

Seven Bunbury Zontians attended and thoroughly enjoyed the Area Workshop in Perth. Valuable presentations from a variety of speakers gave us some great ideas and insights. Congratulations to Area Director Jane Moulden, Sandra Burns and the Zonta Club of Perth team for presenting such an interesting program. We were fortunate to have both our Governor Erica Majba and Governor Elect Judy Gorton attending and presenting!
Last week it was announced that the Zonta House Refuge Association won the WACOSS Community Excellence Award 2016 for a medium size organisation for their Positive Pathways program.
Click on the logo above to access more information about this important program that was established in 2013 as a preventative program assisting women to lead more independent, safer and fulfilling lives.
Congratulations to the Zonta House Refuge and everyone involved in Positive Pathways!

We offer our hearty congratulations to Zonta clubs in our District that are celebrating important milestones in May and June:
Melbourne on Yarra
The Zonta Club of Melbourne on Yarra is celebrating 50 years of Zonta service in May 2016 and being the longest continuing club in AUSTRALIA, they are effectively celebrating 50 years of Zonta in Australia. What an important milestone!
Dunsborough - celebrating 25 years in May
Perth Northern Suburbs - celebrating 35 years in June.

Zonta Peel's Golf Day

Congratulations to the Zonta Club of Peel members who again had an outstanding Golf Day, raising $12,802 for breast cancer research. This fundraiser has been held for 23 years now, and has raised in excess of  $203,000.
It is a fitting tribute to Peel Zontians that their event is one of District 23's winning club entries in the Zonta Service Recognition Awards.

Proposed 2016 - 2018 International Projects

Sonja Hönig Schough, Zonta International President-Elect 2016-2018 says fewer projects are proposed in the new biennium so our donations can have a bigger impact where they are spent.
However, all the projects have one common denominator: they are all working to ensure autonomy and self-sufficiency for women. Every woman shall have a choice.
Click here to read about the proposed biennium goals that convention delegates will be voting on.

Convention Delegate & Alternate

This year we will have two votes at Convention with Jan Greive as our delegate and Beth Trainer the alternate, in the event that Jan is not able to carry out delegate duties.
Before Convention, Jan and Beth will be touring Switzerland, going on to Vienna, then will be joined by Carole Theobald from the ZC of Perth in Poland, where Zonta friends that Jan met at the Rotterdam Convention will take them on a tour of their country before going to Nice. Another short post convention trip is planned before returning home.
Club members will be keen to hear lots of great stories on their return. We thank Jan and Beth for representing our club and wish them a safe journey. Have fun ladies!

Newsletter Editor Changeover

At present we have two newsletter editors, whilst they both learn how to conquer Mail Chimp! After Convention, when Jo Wittorff begins her role as Area 3 Director, Nan Martella will become our new Zontact editor.
Thank you to Nan for stepping into this position.
Founded in 1919, Zonta International is a global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy.
