Remember
by Margo Bodishbaugh
How would you like to give someone a gift they will treasure for years to come? I have proclaimed myself a terrible gift-giver, so to get someone a gift they will treasure is gold to me.
This year for Christmas my daughter Alex gave me the gift of storytelling. She found a company that emails me a question once a week and I can answer that question with as short or long a response as I like. At the end of the year, the company will print and bind as many copies of my yearlong storytelling as I pay for, so they can be given to other interested family members.
When I first started, it was super easy and fun to tell childhood stories. Then, as time went on, a question would appear, and my first remembrance was negative. I didn’t want to go back down that road of hurt, sadness, or heartbreak. But, as I let some of the less attractive questions sift within my mind, I was able to see God’s hand even in the challenging times. I could see how He protected me, and how some of my major disappointments were moving me in a direction to lean into Him and His Word. I could see some of the hardest times in my life have since been used to further His Kingdom. Each step on the road has led me to where I am today.
This may seem elementary, but we need to remember the times God has guided us, protected us, healed us, and so much more. We need to retell His goodness. We want to remind each other of the times when He shielded us from disasters we didn’t see. And we rejoice in our dependence on Him and His provision in our darkest moments.
Deuteronomy follows the Israelites as they wandered the desert for 40 years. In Deuteronomy 8:2 Moses encourages a new generation of Israelites to remember God’s goodness:
“Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.”
God guided them, fed them, and kept them clothed for 40 years before they entered the Promised Land. Moses is telling them to remember.
I want to remember the times God has been so good to me. I want to be aware of His goodness each day in the little things. As I think back through a lifetime of stories, I want to see God in each one.

Every Sunday, incredible leaders in our Early Childhood ministry sing, teach, and explore God’s story with children from birth through Pre-K, and get to see first-hand how God is working in the lives of the youngest members of our family of faith. We encourage you to join us in the joy of seeing the next generation learn to love Jesus by serving with us during one service on Sunday mornings and worshiping during one service.
