UMA WEEKLY UPDATE
September 25, 2021
Conference Time
It seems like just yesterday it was the first day of school, now it's time for conferences. Families can meet in-person or online with their student's advisor on Thursday, September 30 from 3-8 pm or Friday, October 1 from 8:30 am-12:30 pm.  Advisors will reach out to families about scheduling a time & day to meet. There is no school for students on both days.

Discounted parking for $5 is available at the municipal parking Ramp 7A on Exchange Street, next to the Scientology Building.

UMA Receives Grant from Ramsey County
Two years ago, Culinary teacher Dina Berray, advisor to the high school Climate Changers Club pursued a recycling grant opportunity with Ramsey County.  With students back in the building, UMA was ready to access funding for new recycling and trash containers.  Instead of an odd assortment of containers, each room now has similar sized containers for consistency throughout the school that will ensure items are disposed of correctly and increase recycling participation at school and home.

The Climate Changers Club has additional activities planned for the remaining grant money.  High School students interested in joining the club are welcome to attend an after-school meeting on Tuesday, September 28 from 4:30 - 5:30 pm.  Or, connect with a club member via their Instagram page.
Back to School News & Resources

Water Bottle and Masks are a Must
Each student needs to have their own water bottle and mask while at school each day.  To reduce the spread of germs, water fountains are only available for bottle filling.  A water bottle is essentials for students, please remind them to bring one each day and ensure they have a mask.

Parking and Student Pick-Up at UMA
Free one hour parking is available at the 7A parking ramp next to the Scientology Building. For student safety and consideration of our neighbors with the congested area in front of school on Exchange Street, parents picking up students at the end of the day need to use the one hour free parking from 4:15-5:15 pm at the 7A parking ramp next to the Scientology Building.

Students are escorted safely across the street via the Skyway where parents can meet them on the 2nd floor.  It's a quick return to your parked vehicle and easy exit out of the parking ramp.

Additional instructions for pick-up/drop-off during the day can be found on the school's website.

Zero Hour (before school care)
Middle school students may arrive to school as early as 7:30 am and be supervised by school staff for $5 per day in a classroom until 9:00 am.  Students will sign-in each morning they arrive early and a zero hour invoice will be sent to parents each month for this service.

High school students may arrive to school as early as 7:30 am and remain unsupervised in the 2nd floor flex space until 9:00 am.
What's Happening at School
Unique to Upper Mississippi Academy is our Community Friday learning experiences with students exploring nearby resources outside of the school classroom.  Middle school students started off the school year by taking public transportation to Crosby Farm Regional Park along the Mississippi River in St. Paul.  Here, they not only explored and hiked the natural area, they worked on collaborative activities leading to greater teamwork and friendships.  Next up, middle schoolers will go on an all day and evening trip in October to Camp St. Croix in Hudson, Wisconsin.
