UMA WEEKLY UPDATE
February 11, 2022
UMA Community -
It is with sadness and gratitude that I share the news of a staff member, Mark Dallmann, who is stepping forward from UMA to a position at the University of Minnesota.  When Mark and I spoke, he said that this was not a casual or light decision and that the offer came to him much quicker than expected.  This exciting offer moved his retirement from 30+ years of public school teaching, up a couple of months.

For those that did not know, Mark Dallmann is a founding teacher at UMA and has served UMA for nearly nine years. Mark will be in contact with students so that he can ensure a smooth transition for everyone.  His last day with UMA will be on Friday, February 18, 2022.

As we each take this information into consideration, please join me in wishing Mark all the best in his next adventure.
UMA School Store
Exciting news, UMA has three updated designs and clothing options for students to show their school pride.  Check out our online school store for a new t-shirt, sweatshirt or hoodie. The school store will be open until February 25, items can be ordered directly online or with an order form found in the school office.  Items will be delivered to school in mid-March and distributed directly to students to take home.  If the online school store goes well, more designs and items will be added and promoted in the future.
What's Happening at School
Seventh graders recently studied the Revolutionary War with teacher Mark Dallmann. Tasked with researching individuals from this historical time, students sought out individuals that are often left out of history books, such as women, children and people of color.  Have you heard of Crispus Attucks?  A sailor and rope maker, Attucks was a multi-racial man killed in one of the first battles of the war. Students created drawings of their historical figures and presented their information to the entire class.

Get Vaccinated!
All eligible Minnesotans are encouraged to get vaccinated and boosted. Minnesota is offering boosters at the state’s Mall of America (16+) and MSP Airport (18+) vaccine sites as well as other state-run and state-hosted 5- to 11-year-old vaccine clinics, including those hosted at schools.

Minnesotans can find boosters anywhere vaccines are offered. For ages 18 and over, the booster dose does not have to be the same brand of vaccine as your initial series. Minnesotans 16 and 17 years old must get a Pfizer booster shot. Visit mn.gov/vaccine or contact a provider to get boosted and vaccinated. Find information specifically about boosters here.

Friendly reminder students need to wear a mask while on school buses to and from school each day.  They should not leave the house without a mask or a water bottle, both a required school supply.

Do you have a KN95 or N95 mask and want to reuse it?  These sturdy masks can be used more than once. This article gives information on how to safely reuse and know when to dispose of it.
Counselor's Corner
Upper Mississippi Academy will be administering the 2022 Minnesota Student Survey to students in all grade levels on February 16th and 17th, 2022. The survey is conducted every three years in schools across the state.

The Minnesota Student Survey is an anonymous statewide school based survey, used to gain insights on student’s experiences. It provides valuable information vital to the health, safety and academic success of all students. Students respond to questions on school climate, bullying, out-of-school activities, healthy eating, emotional health, substance use and connections with school and family.

More information on the survey can be found on the Minnesota Department of Education website.  The survey is voluntary, if you would like to opt your child out of the survey, please contact Anna Walters anna.walters@umissacademy.org before February 14, 2022.

PSEO Information Session
Post Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) allows students to earn dual credit for college classes while still in high school. Approximately 15 students take advantage of this program each year. There will be a virtual and in person  information session available for UMA students and their parents/guardians. We will cover topics on how to apply, materials needed, how to choose courses, expectations, requirements, and the benefits and potential drawbacks of pursuing PSEO. Any student interested in pursuing PSEO should attend.
  • In Person Session: Wednesday February 23, 2022 at 7pm
  • Virtual Session: Wednesday March 2, 2022 at 7pm (A link will be sent to email addresses provided prior to the session.)

Please RSVP here if you are interested in attending.

International Student Hosting
The last two years have brought to UMA exchange students from Finland and Germany, all thanks to a UMA family that has welcomed international exchange students into their home. The exchange of cultures and language is a great opportunity for the school as well as the host family.  For more information about hosting, contact Kimberly Morvig with Nacel Open Door, 612-750-4928, kmorvig@team.nacelopendoor.org   A contribution of $500 to UMA is possible if a family successfully meets the hosting requirements.
