UMA WEEKLY UPDATE
April 29, 2020

Dear UMA Families,

Did your student use a locker at school? Since there is no school on Monday, May 4, this day has been designated to pick-up locker items. All items left in the assigned students locker will be bagged up and ready for pick up on Monday, May 4th.  This will be curbside service, parents and students will not be allowed to enter the building.  In order to keep the congestion to a minimum we would like our families to arrive for pick up at the designated time listed below.  Please use the first letter of your student’s last name when looking at the schedule.

A-L  9:00 am – 11:00 am

M-Z  11:00 am – 1:00 pm

Open 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm

Pick-Up Procedures

  • Pull along the curb on Wabasha Street, please remain in your vehicle.
  • Post a sheet of paper in your front window with the following information.
  1. the first (legal and nickname) and last name of your student(s),
  2. the grade(s) of your student(s),
  3. the advisory teacher(s) for your student(s), and
  4. your cell phone number in case we need to call you in your car.
  • Belongings will be delivered directly to you on the curb next to your vehicle. Retrieve the bag(s) once the staff member has cleared the area.

Please make every effort to pick-up materials on Monday.  Consider checking with your friends and neighbors to consolidate your efforts and help each other out.

UMA Board of Directors Elections
Directors serving on the Upper Mississippi Academy (UMA) Board are elected by our community; eligible voters are all parents and legal guardians of current UMA students, all current UMA Board members, and all current employees of UMA.

Due to Governor Walz making May 4, 2020 a non-student day, the UMA Board of Directors election date has been moved to Tuesday, May 5, 2020. If you are not able to access email and need to vote via other means, please contact Lesley Ernst at lesley.ernst@umissacademy.org

The slate of nominees, along with other related information on the UMA Board of Directors can be found on the school's website.
UMA Gala
The Gala Committee is working on a contingency plan for UMA’s annual Spring Gala.  The Committee is currently exploring options for hosting a small virtual event in May to support UMA and its mission during these challenging times.  Look for more information coming your way next week.
Distance Learning Resources
Check out the Distance Learning page on the school's website for resources and tools for students and families.  The school social workers continually update the list of resources compiled to assist and help families impacted by Covid-19.

If your student is feeling particularly stressed or overwhelmed please reach out to:
Another great resource is the Free Meals for Kids mobile App which will help students and families in need find and access free meals at hundreds of schools and other sites across Minnesota. It is the central resource for statewide information about schools, school districts and communities offering meals during school closures.  The free App can be downloaded wherever you get your phone apps.
What's Happening in Distance Learning Classes
Have you seen on your walks in the neighborhood cutouts of paper hearts on windows and doors?  This simple idea was started by Kids for Peace to spread love during the Covid-19 pandemic.

With no school Friday and Monday this would be a great time to try this. Just make a heart from any object and tape it to a street-facing window to send your love out to the world. Take a picture and send to school at info@umissacademy.org  Submissions will be entered into a drawing for a UMA t-shirt.  Encourage others to do the same. Then, in a few days, take a walk (keeping 6 feet distance from others!) to search for other hearts on houses. We are in this together!

School Yearbooks
The yearbook club is still working hard on getting a yearbook together to remember this special school year! Yearbooks will be delivered directly to homes (not the school).  Order your yearbook now to get started on your personal pages!
  • Deadline to order: May 25, 2020
  • Delivery to homes: no later than June 29, 2020
  1. Go to treering.com/validate
  2. Use code: 1014411217082259
  3. Cost: $21.37 + $2.99 shipping = $24.36

ENROLLMENT AT UMA
We think Upper Mississippi Academy is pretty special and unique. If your family thinks so too, please let friends and neighbors know about our hands-on, experiential learning.  We still have open seats in all grades for the 2020-2021 school year.  Soon, our website will feature an informational slideshow and virtual tour for those interested in learning more about us.  Remember, siblings of current UMA students receive 'sibling preference' in next year's enrollment process, so be sure to complete an online 2020-2021 application for them.

UMA staff will be sending emails and making phones calls to UMA families that have not completed the Intent to Return form for next school year. To avoid that, families should complete the online form as soon as possible.

Job Openings at UMA
UMA has several open staff positions for the 2020-2021 school year posted on the school's website.  Positions include teachers for special education, high school Biology, middle school Math and Science, and special education paraprofessionals. The paraprofessional position is flexible for part-time or full-time hours with benefits.  Spread the word among friends and family members that might be interested.  The school's website has complete job descriptions and application instructions.
