Our Art Week

Our second Arts in the Tawe Valley was yet another success. Visitors come from far and wide to take part in workshops, vist exhibitions and open studios. Several artist sold artwork, generated commissions, and signed up to clases.

Below are photos and comments from a few of our artist that took part.

"I had a FAB art week … meeting new people, making friends, meeting old friends and playing with glass. I have been so busy with other aspects of the business that I hadn't realised how much I have missed my cold, scruffy, heavenly studio. Thank you to all my visitors. I hope you enjoyed your visit." (Rhian Goodhand - Goodhand Glass)

"Tawe Art Week is an excellent time to talk through ideas and projects at a relaxed pace. I reorganised the studio and the sculpture garden. I included a variety of sculptures in my annual sale and got a fresh perspective on all my work. This is invaluable for the following year. Plus it's just lovely to feel part of an interesting, friendly community." (Rebecca Buck - Osprey Studio)
"Successful Artsweek 2017 with many visitors to have a look, book classes and attend demonstrations. in stained glass, silversmithing and playing with fire" (Jane Carpenter)
"I absolutely loved the Art week. Very happy to see collectors come from as far away as Bath to buy artwork. The Riverside Gallery is a beautiful venue and I recommend visiting it." Amanda Dagg
As part of AitTV art week Julia Harris organised a community mural on the public toilets in Ystradgynlais which coincide with the towns musical Buskergynlais event. The weekend was a great success with many of the local children and adults taking part.

Oriel Lliw Private View OVER Thirty
Bethan Ash Contempory Quilt Exhibition

Friday 11th August 7pm – 10pm.
Oriel Lliw Pontardawe Arts Centre
Herbert St, SA8 4ED Swansea, United Kingdom

‘Over Thirty’ - a selection of contemporary art quilts by Bethan Ash. This fabulous exhibiton, which will include selected works from Arts in the Tawe Valley members in the shop area, will run from the 11th August to 18th September.

'Bethan Ash is a quilt artist who loves to paint. Her work, while based in the tradition of quilt-making, is in fact more akin to collage.

Colour is the backbone of her work and she loves to make collage, using a technique of fusing and layering the fabrics she has previously painted and finishing by stitching each piece. Her work is strongly influenced by social and popular culture that most of us can relate to, such as; consumer goods, the environment, popular culture and dieting - mixing a combination of social issues and abstract ideas with colour, texture and stitch.

Bethan will be showing a selection of her art quilts and collage at Pontardawe Art Centre, during August and September this year, the title of the exhibition “Over Thirty”, does not refer to the number of works that there will be on show, but refers to the number of years she has been making art quilts!

The exhibition will display a colourful selection of art quilts and collages she has made during this time.

Bethan will also be giving a workshop at the Centre (dates to be confirmed), where you can learn her improvised way of working.

She has a deep respect and love of art quilts for their history as a vehicle for personal expression and believes that they are tactile evidence that we were here and left something of value as a mirror of ourselves and accomplishments.'

The exhibition will be running from 11th August - 18th September.

We hope you’re able to attend and look forward to seeing you there.

Introducing one of our Groups

 Pontardawe Art Club

email: victor.james@ntlworld
Facebook : Pontardawe Art Club

The club was formed approximately 26 years ago and currently meet at Ynysmeudwy Community Centre every Monday morning. The club has a diverse membership with an age range of between 50 and 80 years old. We work with different mediums e.g pastel, watercolour, acrylic and pen and ink. The club has exhibited in several different venues over the years e.g. the Grand Theatre, Pontardawe Cross, Pontardawe Art Centre and recently in Victoria Gardens in Neath. We would relish a chance to exhibit in Oriel Lliw in the near future.
We also have workshops with visiting artists a few times a year which is very productive.

Introducing our member

Gordon Grattidge

I painted in watercolour for some time before changing to acrylic because of the spontaneity and vibrancy of this medium. I enjoy the opportunity to interpret the landscape wherever I am, be it in the highlands of Scotland, the levels of Somerset or at home in the Swansea Valley.

Introducing our member

Jean McIntyre

I have painted with oils and acrylics for many years developing my knowledge or colour, texture, design and spacial awareness.  I am now exploring the creation of felt, hand made fabrics, paper collage and mixed media to create expressive pictures.
