TBTC E-Notes - December 2019

It's bitter sweet to reach the end of a year. While it's a time to reflect on the year that is passing, and a time to anticipate what's ahead in the coming year, December itself is too often associated with stress.

If you are one of those people - and there are many of us - who want healthier ways to enjoy this month, then do check our Hiking Calendar. Spend the time on the trails with your fellow hikers instead of in the malls. Winter hiking is a particular pleasure as long as you use the right gear.

This month's newsletter includes a great deal of news, from announcing an end-to-end event of the entire trail to a heads up about online payment coming to the club to a call out for nominations for volunteer awards and more.

Happy December, everyone.

Stay safe – know your winter hiking gear

Avoid slips and falls on the trails this winter by equipping yourself with good quality icers. Icers are mandatory for many of the winter hikes in our calendar. To the left is a picture of some good ones from MEC, and below right is a version from Lee Valley Tools.

Bruce Trail End to End Fundraiser 2020

How's this for a New Year’s Resolution?  Hike the entire Bruce Trail in 2020 AND raise money for the future of the Bruce Trail.

We are inviting you to join hike leaders from 3 BTC clubs as they hike the trail in 3 stages, March 14-27, April 14-27, and May 2-15, from South to North. They will hike approximately 20-25km on each day to complete the 900+km trail. Participants are asked to raise $500 each for the Bruce Trail Conservancy. If you would like to participate in this event, confirm by email on January 6, 2020 (not before) to ruthdmoffatt@gmail.com. This event is limited to 20 members including 3 hike leaders Ruth Moffatt – Niagara/ Iroquoia, Jacqueline VanDyke – Toronto and Sandra Green – Caledon Hills.

Online payment coming soon

This one is for all of you who come on our bus-hikes - cashless bus-fares! Starting some time in the first half of 2020, our club will be using Eventbrite for registration and payment for all hikes. That should come as good news - a simpler system for signing up, and best of all, no more fast trips to the ATM on the morning of the hike!

We will be running a couple of trials to get the kinks worked out:
  • Martina Furrer's hike from Speyside to Limehouse on December 14th, registration opens on December 1 at 9 pm.
  • Wayne Crockett's snowshoe outing on Sunday January 19th at HIlton Falls, registration opens on December 28th at 9 pm.
Just sign in, register and pay on-line. Then all you have to do is show up and sit back to enjoy the day on the trails!

2020 Hike Leader Training Course, April 4-5

Would you like to be a hike leader for the Toronto Bruce Trail Club? Then you will want to keep the weekend of April 4-5, 2020 open. We'll be offering our two day course on the fundamentals of how to lead a safe and fun outing. The course is taught by experienced hike leaders who will provide practical insights and advice in an enjoyable and instructive combination of classroom and outdoor instruction.

Prerequisites:
  • A member in good standing of the BTC for at least one year prior to the training.
  • Completion of the Level C First Aid and CPR course
Following the course you will be required to do an apprenticeship of at least 3 hikes, assisting a certified hike leader to give you additional practical experience. Final certification follows the successful planning and completion of your 'graduation' hike.

Details on registration will be sent out in January by E-Notes. If you have questions in the meantime please email the Chair of the Hike Leader Training Committee Peter Leeney

This request is for one-time assistance, not ongoing.
