Dear <<First Name>>

It has been an interesting four months for both my wife and I. In fact, it has probably been the longest months of my life - or so it has seemed. Waking up at ridiculous hours of the night to tend to Anna and Lily has not always been fun, but to see them grow and slowly develop their own little personalities has been the greatest joy. And the best is that they have started to respond with the funniest, cutest smiles, which makes it all worthwhile!

Here they are having their first fly-tying lesson. Things are look promising for a Dad that never seems to have enough flies in his fly box.

Orange River

Earlier this month I managed to get a couple of days off (courtesy of my darling wife) to go on a 4-day paddling trip down the Orange River. It was for a friend’s 50th birthday bash and very hard to resist, especially with the river hosting South Africa’s premier indigenous freshwater fish –  the Yellowfish.

We headed North out of Cape Town, and about 7 hours later crossed the border into Namibia, where the paddling trip started. Once our Mohawk styled canoes were packed, we headed out into an indescribable wilderness. You are surrounded by magnificent, ancient mountains, so arid you can’t imagine anything being able to live there. In the three days of paddling, we covered a distance of 70km. With all this paddling, we didn’t have a vast amount of time to cast our flies, but when the opportunity did arise, there was no stopping us!

Etihad Modern Art Gallery

Recently, I was asked to exhibit my work at Abu Dhabi’s leading art gallery, The Etihad Modern Art Gallery. This was a fantastic opportunity to get my work into the United Arab Emirates, which is surrounded by a warm ocean filled with incredible sea life. The people in that part of the world have a great respect and admiration for the oceans and its creatures.

Here are a couple of pieces I had shipped over to get the ball rolling.

Golden Fly Tarpon Tournament

The Golden Fly Tarpon Tournament was recently held in Florida Keys, USA and I made tarpon sculptures for the event.

These fish, in my books, are truly magnificent. For a saltwater fly angler, they have absolutely everything to offer. They are fast, stealthy, high jumpers with loads of endurance, and are very hard to hook because of their bony mouths. But best of all, they are super fussy at the best of times. I love these fish! They deserve a lot of respect and need to be looked after super-special!

This month's paintings

I have been experimenting with colour in my latest paintings, with salmon being the main subject matter. With these specific paintings I tried to emphasize the breeding colors by painting them in a more stylized, impressionistic manner.

Feel free to let me know what you think…

So as you've read it's been an interesting few weeks since the last letter, filled with all the things that make me love doing what I'm doing. I've got even more exciting news on the horizon (no, it's not more babies) and will tell you in our next chat.

Thanks and Ciao
