Private Retreats from East to West

Overview

Whether it’s in the coming months or next year, more folks are thinking about group celebrations - a sort of post-COVID reunion with family and friends.

If you are looking for a spectacular venue, in this week’s issue we highlight takeovers from Cape Cod and the Hamptons to Washington D.C. and Napa.

1. The Wauwinet, Nantucket, MA

# of bedrooms: 32
# of guests: 64
Price: Starts at $13,500/night

Situated on the northeast end of Nantucket, bordering the peaceful Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge, the 32-room Wauwinet offers the feel of a private home and is the only property on Nantucket with access to two private beaches. Opened in 1875, it was one of the island's first hotels.

In 1882, the inn was purchased by the new owners for $1,700 and by the 1930s, taking a summer vacation on the elbow-shaped island was firmly established as an American tradition. During the fall, lobstering, surfcasting, and scenic drives to neighboring 'Sconset in the property's 1948 Woody are included in the stay.

Smaller groups might prefer The Anchorage House by Serena & Lily, a three-bedroom cottage accommodating up to seven guests. The cottage enjoys all the amenities at The Wauwinet, including access to private beaches on the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Bay.

The Wauwinet

2. Daniel Webster House at Jared Coffin House, Nantucket, MA

# of bedrooms: 13 rooms
# of guests: 26
Price: Starts at $5,000/night

Nantucket’s historic Jared Coffin House is one of the oldest hotels on the island and comprises two landmark buildings located right off Main Street. The Main Building of the hotel was built by Jared Coffin, a prominent whaling shipowner of his time, as a family residence. The adjacent Daniel Webster House was added in 1964 offering an additional 13 rooms, several of which can be connected for families and is available for exclusive buyout year-round with a private entrance.

The guest rooms each feature Queen Anne-style furnishings, creating the feeling of a bygone era. Island news includes the 200th anniversary of the sinking of the Essex, the Nantucket-based whaling ship that inspired Herman Melville to write Moby-Dick. When Melville came to the island (actually after he already wrote the book), he stayed at Ocean House (now Jared Coffin House). Also, new this year, the Tap Room – a staple on-island for 40 years – will re-open after a 14-year hiatus.

3. Shou Sugi Ban House, The Hamptons

# of bedrooms: 13
# of guests: 26
Price: Starts at $112,500/week

The wellness retreat and destination spa opened in Water Mill in May 2019 as the first of its kind on Long Island. Available for a full buyout, the 13 guest studios are all accessible via private entrances to the outside. Each studio has its own locally-made, Kobe-style bed, fireplace, and bathtub – half of which are Hinoki ofuro (Japanese soaking tubs).

The team works closely with groups who buy out the property for an extended period to negotiate what they need and arrange the experiences they are interested in, including wellness programming (from yoga to reiki) to meals designed by Mads Refslund, co-founder on Noma. The property’s three Teslas are even available for use. Onsite amenities include a private tennis court, a variety of pools, a thermal suite, a kitted-out fitness studio, and a rooftop deck. And of course, spa treatments are available on-property as well.

4. Chateau de Vie, Napa Valley, CA

# of bedrooms: 5
# of guests: 10
Price: Starts at $1,705/night

Reminiscent of a farmhouse, this five-guestroom home is set among the vineyards of wine country. Four bedrooms are located in the main house and all offer views of the vines, while the stand-alone King Carriage House Junior Suite has a private courtyard and entrance.

The expansive outdoor deck is an ideal spot to sip a glass of Cabernet made from grapes a stone’s throw away or to enjoy a complimentary breakfast, cooked by co-owner, Felipe Barragan. A heated lap pool is also steps from the main house. Dozens of Napa Valley wineries and Calistoga's walkable downtown are located within a 10-minute drive.

5. The Cottages of Napa Valley, CA

# of cottages: 9
# of guests: 20
Price: Starts at $4,175/night

These Provencal-style cottages form an oval around a courtyard shaded by a mix of majestic Oak, Redwood, Cedar, and Douglas Fir trees, some nearly a century old. Each of the cottages, ranging between 450- and 1,400-square-feet, come with a private patio and wood-burning fireplace.

Some of the units date back to the 1920s and were frequented by Hollywood legends, such as Clark Gable and Carole Lombard. Amenities include complimentary wine and a basket of breakfast pastries from Thomas Keller's Bouchon Bakery that are delivered to each cottage daily.

Located in Napa, the Cottages are close to Trefethen Family Vineyard and Andretti Winery. Shuttle service to nearby restaurants and complimentary bicycles is also offered.

6. Dupont Circle Penthouse Floor, Washington D.C.

# of bedrooms: 12
# of guests it can accommodate: 24
Price: Starts at $20,000/night

The Dupont Circle hotel in Washington D.C., fresh off of a renovation by Martin Brudnizki, recently lifted the veil on a new penthouse floor. The crown jewel Penthouse Suite is designed by Clodagh in a mid-century aesthetic with ribbed glass mirrors and brass details.

The heated outdoor terrace overlooking Dupont Circle has views of the Washington Monument and adds an additional 600 square feet. Inside, the fireplace, wet bar, dining table, and lounge area make for a perfect intimate gathering space.

The top suite, which is available in one- and two-bedroom configurations, can be connected with the remaining suites on the rooftop floor for a private buyout – ideal for an extended family, a foreign diplomat (the hotel is close to Embassy Row), or even an extravagant party. The suites are some of the only ones in the city with outdoor spaces. Private elevator and garage access are available as well as special security at an additional cost.
