Hello December!

Preschool, 1st and 2nd grade students welcomed one of the most expected times of the year: Christmas.

On Wednesday, November 30th  they turned on the lights of the school’s Christmas tree with much anticipated enthusiasm. Sitting under the Christmas tree, they shared their expectations and family plans for the holidays, while looking up at our magnificent tree.

After all, they drank a delicious hot cocoa made especially for them, getting the perfect kick off for the day. It was definitely the perfect way to start the season!

Jornada "Limpia tu Ciudad" 2016

Saint Thomas School Soccer Cup

Last Weekend, our soccer team won second place on the 2016 Saint Thomas School Soccer Cup, in a breathtaking game.

It was an amazing opportunity for our young players to get more experience on the field, get to know different players and game techniques and show everyone the great things you can accomplish when you work hard for it.

It was a great finale, where all the attendants were able to see the energy and spirit shown by our young players, even though when faced with much older and bigger kids.
Awesome game!

In today’s world, speaking one foreign language is not enough. Students who speak several languages will increase their chances of finding a job, whether at home or abroad. Learning another language enriches the mind and opens up new horizons, both personal and professional.

This month our tenth graders are learning about activities that they can do on vacations with their family or alone. This will help them to improve their vocabularies and also know about different activities that can be done in other countries during vacation time. Throughout the lesson they have shown great interest of knowing how other kids the same age spend their vacation time, and have made their lists of special and new activities that they can do on their next summer vacation.

Learning the Importance of Service Workers

In second grade, the students have been learning about service workers and their duties. They have become aware of the importance that service workers have on the community and that service workers are jobs that are directed toward helping all of the citizens in one way or another.

The second grade students have worked on a project in which they have chosen a service job that they would like to do.  They presented their job title, place of employment, different job responsibilities and supplies and /or equipment they would need.  Then they exposed their projects in front of the class explaining all of its aspects.

The children enjoyed standing before their classmates to read, talk about the service job they would like to do and to show the drawing of themselves in such position.
I enjoyed seeing their facial expressions as they walked back to their seats after presenting.

They could not contain cracking a smile to express that they felt very proud of themselves.

 Year 6 Charity Events

Our fantastic children in Year 6, led by Grace, organised themselves into "companies" using their own pocket money as investment. They went to supermarkets to buy supplies, with which they made snacks to sell at break times. This included ice-creams, bananas dipped in chocolate and donuts!

In one week they raised £198, in addition to organising a games event where all children were invited to play simple sports activities for prizes and a Mufti day. The total raised was £531.27, testament to the value of teaching children in small classes to use their initiative and creativity, rather than simply focusing test scores.

Parent Focus: Mr. Vladan Filipovic - The importance of Community Service and Involvement

Professionally Mr. Vladan FIlipovic is an extremely successful Players' Agent in the area of football, he is the owner of F-Group Kft. His company is responsible for the management of some of the biggest names in Hungarian football.

Mr. Filipovic is also the father of three talented and ambitious young men. Stefan, who graduated as part of the class of 2016 is currently studying at ELTE, while his two younger brothers, Igor and Marko, are still students at SEK Budapest. It is precisely because of this that Mr. Filipovic puts a big stress on values and community service and involvement both at home and in his professional career.

Two weeks ago we had the privilege of hosting Mr. Filipovic at the school while he gave our IB students a thorough presentation about the importance and value of being involved and giving back to the community from a young age. He spoke about his own community service work as a way to inspire the students. Mr. Filipovic himself is involved with the Gyermekkor Alapítvány, an organization that helps collect donations for the Madarász Utcai Children's Hospital, and he encourages the professional players he works with as well as anyone who has the chance to do so too. Coincidentally this is the same organization that SEK Budapest has had a long standing collaboration with too!

Our students were inspired and moved to action by Mr. Filipovic's presentation, not only did they have the chance to follow the example of a successful professional doing good for his community, but they also understood the importance of practicing good values and being an involved and collaborative member of society. We believe that community service should be both challenging and enjoyable - a personal journey of self-discovery that recognizes each student's individual starting point.

A big thank you to Mr. Filipovic for speaking to our students! We are proud to have you as part of the SEK Budapest community.
