INTERSEK DEPORTIVO

Responsible Children

In the past “Parents' School”, we discussed about "responsible children". During this conversation, the parents were able to clarify doubts and take notes on how we can collaborate to create an awareness of responsibility in our children.

The parents could see that there are always some type of chores that each child can do according to their age; the important thing is that the child grows with the habit of collaboration and work.
As every month, the parent school continues to bring topics of interest to all parents. We thank the parents who accompanied us.

Visiting the Book Fair

Last week, the 7th and 8th grade students visited the Book Fair 2017. They participated on the activities prepared on the Youth Stand, where they met young writers.
The students were amazed by this year’s book fair. It was well organized and offered great things for those book friendly.

After the program worked there, they continued their work on their language arts class, where they had to make an exposition of what they learned.

OPERATION SMILE

Hout Bay International School International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) students Claire Rideout and Thireena Mudley had the immense privilege of participating in an Operation Smile Medical mission to Zomba, Malawi in April this year. They were accompanied by their school teacher and Operation Smile Student Sponsor, Lucas Grant.

Operation Smile is a non-profit medical organisation which offers free cleft lip and cleft palette surgeries around the world. The Operation Smile team were able to perform 119 surgeries over the course of five days in Zomba with incredible results.

The student team mostly assisted the Child Life specialist whose job it is to educate the patients on what to expect inside the operating room and to provide a safe and relaxing environment before surgery. The team also visited the patient accommodation where they gave educational talks on topics such as Oral Hygiene and Nutrition as well as colouring and craft activities and a few competitive games of netball! The students were able to 'scrub in', as they say, and watch the surgeons and medical team perform an operation, learning a great deal about the medical profession in general and plastic surgery in particular.

"Malawi was incredible from the people to the operations. 121 people were operated on, ranging in age from 6 months to 65 years. We spent 10 days there with 5 days being surgery days. Thireena and I were privileged to be able to watch several surgeries on patients we were following. This was an amazing experience with incredible people, whose lives were changed by just this one visit. Operation Smile performs free operations for children with cleft lips and palates in countries where people can't afford the operation. This experience was life changing for us and those operated on." – Claire Rideout IBDP2

Hout Bay International School has made a long term commitment to supporting Operation Smile; the medical missions are a wonderful opportunity for students to be inspired by people who are changing the world one smile at a time.

Observing the Sun

Grade 3 is studying the Solar System and our relationship to it. They learned that sunlight takes about 8.5 minutes to reach Earth. They also learned that the sun emits very strong light and radiation, preventing humans from looking directly at it. Students in Grade 3 built a simple solution that allowed them to observe the sun safely.
