In wanting to recognize Indigenous People’s Day in Canada, we sent out an email earlier today on what is a very important day in Black History: Juneteenth. Juneteenth is known as Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day; a day when slavery ended.
We messed up and we need to apologize: in our recognition of Indigenous People’s Day, and in our attempt to bring awareness to issues without conflating them, we failed to recognize Juneteenth in our email. We did not intend to minimize or ignore the importance of Juneteenth, but we recognize that impact is more important than intent, and our impact caused harm. It is an important part of our learning to own our mistakes, recognize when our actions have caused harm, and apologize for what we have done, with a commitment to move forward with anti-racism actions and learning.
We are sorry. We will do better.
What is Juneteenth?
