2/17-2/19 THON 2017 - Igniting Hope Within
THON Weekend Prep

In a few short days, the Penn State community will participate in a 46-hour no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon to fight pediatric cancer. With over 16,500 student volunteers, THON is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. Whether you are on a committee, in an organization, participate through greek life, dancing, or involved in any other way, here are a few things to keep in mind:
  1. Stay hydrated - this is a necessity to physically make it through the weekend
  2. Clothes -  it helps a lot to bring a change of clothes if you will be in the BJC for several hours at a time. Sometimes changing will give you a boost of energy from feeling refreshed.
  3. Be prepared to use Meal Points/Lion Cash at the concession stands - you will need to fuel yourself with food so check your balances before the weekend starts!
  4. Plan ahead in your classes - needless to say, THON is an incredible yet exhausting experience. Plan ahead and get all your work done so that you have time to recover after Sunday.
Most importantly... ENJOY EVERY SECOND. It is amazing to see what the Penn State community can do when we come together and it's an incredible way to see all of our hard work pay off through seeing the smiles on Four Diamond Families' faces. FTK!

Mentor Spotlight
Sarah Regan and Alex Politsky
I cannot express how humbled and honored I am to represent Smeal Student Mentors this year, along with my amazing partner Alex, for 46 hours at THON! I have served as a Mentor, Team Leader and currently President during my time as a Smeal Student Mentor. This organization is very close to my heart and I couldn't ask to represent a better group of people! Cancer has impacted my family as I'm sure it has impacted your own. This should not be the case and by dancing, I am helping in some way to support those who can find a cure. I know I speak for Alex when I say we are so honored and excited to dance for 46 FTK and for our mentors! Visit us on the floor, we would love to see you!
I am honored to be representing Smeal Student Mentors in THON 2017. As the THON Chair for SSM this year, along with being on an R&R committee last year, I have learned so much about THON and how many people's lives it affects each year. I am a junior accounting major and am hoping to get an internship next summer with a big 4 accounting firm. Having this opportunity means so much after months of dedicated fundraising FTK! One day we will dance in celebration. Until then, we dance for a cure!

Career Fairs

Looking for an internship for this summer? Career fairs can be intimidating with the amount of people there and the high pressure environment. However, they can be very useful in getting to know recruiters! It is never too early to start looking and start developing those relationships. Even if they are not looking for Freshmen, it is always a good idea to go and just get some practice talking to recruiters!

1. Research - Look up what recruiters are attending and which companies you are interested in so you can narrow down your options.

2. Prepare - Practice your 30 second pitch and fix up your resume so you can be your best in front of recruiters.

3. Strategize - Plan out which recruiters you are visiting, dress the part, and get their business card so you can follow up with them after the career fair.

THON Update
