Well it looks like Spring has sprung early and we couldn't be happier!  There is nothing like the first signs of spring and they have been everywhere this week. Robins are out and birds chirping everywhere, spring flowers have sprouted and as of today we can enjoy longer (& hopefully warmer) days. Happy Spring!
I had the pleasure of volunteering for an afternoon at SPCA Puerto Vallarta (http://spcapv.com/) while on vacation in Mexico this month, and what a great experience!  I was so impressed with their shelter (which was built and operates 100% on donations) and the importance that they place on enriching the lives of all the animals at the shelter, I have never seen anything like it. From the moment I stepped inside, I was greeted with tail wags and kisses by all the disabled and special needs dogs that they keep up front in the office. From recovered distemper dogs with neurological issues to a few little Chihuahuas that had hind end paralysis, they care deeply for each and every one and never euthanize for space.
Past the front office, the shelter itself was not what I was expecting and I was pleasantly surprised with the facility-especially learning that every single thing had been donated....even the land it was built on!  They even built a hydrotherapy area two years ago to help dogs that may benefit from physical therapy, after the generous donation of the hydrotherapy pool!  The cat ward was unlike anything I have seen before in a shelter setting as well. They were in a large, enclosed area with access to the outdoors and plenty of spots to sun themselves while enjoying the sights and smells of the river that they backed onto.  A far cry from the tiny cages that they are normally locked in here in North America.  The layout and enrichment by the staff and volunteers really showed through with the high spirits of all the animals at the shelter.
It was definitely one of the greatest experiences and I was happy to volunteer my time and bring them a bag of various donations too.  A special thanks to CandidKNines (http://candidknines.com/) as well for sending a few bags of treats for me to take down and donate!

*Special Note*
They have foster homes in BC and Alberta that help out but currently do not have any in Ontario, if anyone can open their heart and homes to an animal in need in this area they would greatly appreciate it!  That would mean they can take in even more abandoned and abused animals off the streets of Mexico and adopt them out into loving homes.  They are completely vet checked, vaccinated, spayed/neutered and groomed before heading into foster homes. Air travel and paperwork are completely taken care of by staff at the shelter with some airlines flying their animals to Canada at no charge. Please consider fostering for this amazing organization today!
