How Engaged Are You?

While the trade shows are over at CRA, the work of the association continues. In the summer months, we get ready for our executive summit, our fall board meetings, next year’s trade shows as well as succession planning.

Speaking of succession planning, it doesn’t matter if it is at the executive board level, director level or local level. If you notice, the word succession starts with success! Success comes with planning and requires help and tools. For us at CRA, to remain as successful as we are, our tools are our members. What I mean by that is we need our members’ continuous involvement in all CRA activities as well as local events.

Do you have what it takes to be involved? The answer is everyone does!
Everyone has something to contribute, and that helps us in our continuous growth. It doesn’t matter if you decide to volunteer in a position such as taking on a role of secretary, treasurer, director, vice-president or president, or simply devoting some of your time during a local event. All are welcome!

Do you know that your local’s success depends on you?
Your involvement and engagement is extremely important.  The more members are involved, engaged and attending local board meetings, gatherings or activities, the bigger the values of a local can get.  These added values can come in different forms such as offering some training or inviting a keynote person to educate on a hot topic and so on….

Choosing to volunteer for the right position.
While these positions are equally important they do not demand the same amount of volunteering hours. If you don’t know what a position you may be interested in involves, please contact us and we will gladly guide you!

It is not a secret and anyone that volunteered at one point or another will share with you that it is not only rewarding but enriching. Your local needs you for their success planning. Don’t wait - get engaged! I assure that you will get the most out of your Association.

I would like to wish everyone a successful summer and I hope to see you at one of your local event!

Nathalie McGregor, Managing Director

Who should attend
CRA Trade Shows?

A Message from CRA National Directors
Whether you’re an independent rental store or a national rental house, our service departments play a key role in our success.
Having our technicians or service managers attend rental shows can bring us huge value and here are just a few examples and benefits:
  • Greater product knowledge and exposure to new trends, products and resources
  • Stimulate new and creative ways to support your service departments
  • Networking and building new relationships
  • Participate in educational and technical seminars
  • Product troubleshooting direct from manufacturers and vendors
  • More hands on interaction and involvement with the CRA/ARA
 - Dan Spencer, CRA Atlantic National Director

There are many reasons for and value in rental houses having their employees attend the trade shows. First off, they get to meet the vendors and product specialists; this is very important when ordering products or even dealing with issues. Knowing who to contact for product support is key to building confidence in your employees. Second, they get to see new product introductions to the market. For a lot of rental houses, going to market first with these new products can have tremendous impact on their bottom line while separating themselves from the competition. Lastly, it will drive the engagement level of your employees. That alone is very important to retaining and growing good talent in our industry.

Touching Fort McMurray story from CBC news, about CRA member Bill Briscoe, Fort McMurray Branch Manager at CAT The Rental Store.

Fort McMurray couple names baby after CBC's Briar Stewart

A baby girl, born just days after her parents were forced to flee a wildfire in Fort McMurray, Alta., will forever bear the name of a CBC reporter who helped document the disaster from the front lines.
As Bill Briscoe and Ninna Forte fled the flames, thoughts of their unborn baby were at the forefront of their minds.

Forte's due date was weeks away as they drove down Highway 63, unsure of whether their northern Alberta city would survive the ravages of the fire.

"We were just talking about things that you're seeing around you; the fire, the people in the ditches, the things that people were carrying on the backs of trucks, like boxes full of memories," said Forte.

"And then we started to talk about things that were going to start happening, like our baby coming right away."

That discussion was a welcome distraction from the pandemonium that surrounded them.

"We had a boy's name picked out, but still hadn't settled on a girl's name," said Forte. "And we kept hearing Briar on the news. Briar Stewart."

Briscoe said as the hours on the highway dragged on, and the sound of CBC radio broadcasts filled their car with fire news, the name Briar seemed the perfect choice for their baby girl.

"I always liked that name, and I heard it on the radio, and it kind of stuck," said Briscoe, who admits he's an avid fan of the public broadcaster. "I read the CBC website almost every day … If I get my news anywhere, I probably get it from the CBC."

Fifteen days after the evacuation — on May 18 — Briar Adele Briscoe was born, healthy, howling and blissfully unaware of the chaos that surrounded her arrival into the world.

Briscoe said he will have no qualms about telling his daughter about the origin of her name. His own childhood was filled with stories about the wildfire in Red Lake, Ont.

"When I was a kid in 1980, we were evacuated from my hometown by Hercules. They flew us all out of there."

"My parents always talked about that experience, I was too young to remember it, but now I'll be able to share a similar story with our daughter."

For her part, when Stewart heard about how Briar Adele got her name, it warmed her heart.

Health & Safety Corner

From your Safety Committee
Struck By Hazards

Workers are at risk when working near construction traffic. One of the biggest dangers is of a worker being struck, which could lead to serious injuries or death.

In May and June 2015, Ministry of Labour inspectors conducted a blitz at construction sites across Ontario. The inspectors focused on the hazards of working around vehicles and large pieces of mobile equipment.

They conducted 1,494 field visits to 1,313 workplaces, and issued 3,056 orders under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), including 261 stop-work orders. Some of the workplaces were visited more than once.
Of the orders:
  • 79 per cent (2,403 orders) were issued under the Regulations for Construction Projects
  • 20 per cent (622 orders) were issued under the OHSA
  • 1 per cent (31 orders) were issued under other regulatory requirements
The three most frequently issued orders under Construction Regulations involved a failure of employers to:
  • ensure workers were protected from falls
  • ensure workers used personal protective equipment when required
  • provide traffic control and planning, and organize vehicle and equipment operation at the construction project
