PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE


 Well, it’s been a heck of a kick off to spring. Temperature records are being broken all across western Canada and the fire season is already out of control. The BC economy is shaping up to be the strongest in Canada and if we want to get political the north would have some great years if that LNG line could get approved. For those of you who could not make it down to the CRA BC Local Trade Show, we moved the show to a much larger venue and it was the best one so far. Attendance, however, was down and we want to build that back up to record levels. We want YOUR opinion on how the suppliers and the BC Local board can attract YOU to attend the best networking and purchasing opportunity of the year. Some of the ideas and questions that are kicking around are:
  • The suppliers offering SHOW ONLY SPECIALS and HONORING them by not selling for that price later
  • Opening up the Saturday of the show to rental store customers that are invited by the store to wander around, ask questions and look directly at the product
  • Turning it back into a one day event and only have the show on the Saturday
  • Have a kids area with Bounce and Plays so the rental store staff and owners can bring their children down to play while they shop
  • The local already offers 2 - $1000 Trade show dollars that are given away, are these not working? Or did you know about them?
  • Are we not advertising/promoting enough?
  • Is it the wrong time of the year?
  • Should we just cancel the whole thing or merge it with the Prairie show?
  • Are Vendors sending out any advertising or promos to the stores at all prior to the show or relying on a Volunteer board to do all the work for them and then complaining about attendance? 
This is your opportunity to help make our show better, this message is calling out rental stores and suppliers. I believe the local has done a lot to make the rental industry in BC a better place to do business and for a volunteer board we have made significant changes to government policies. These changes are funded by events like the trade show, so we would like to see it prosper and expand in the future.

OUTGOING BC NATIONAL DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE


It has been 13 years since I joined the local BC board following in the footsteps of Karyn Bruschinsky and Peggy Daniel.  Those two showed me the ropes on how to organize a meeting, a golf tournament, a trade show, a newsletter, a board of directors,,, the list goes on.  After six years on the local board I moved on to join the CRA National Board, many didn’t realize the difference in the positions as I was still around at the local level.  My successor on the local board was Jim Clipperton, and Erik Gerlof I think that you can all say that he has done a fantastic job working for the local.  Many tease me about being the “puppet master” of the local but the truth is, they learned a thing or two on their own and have grown to the point that they are carrying the local forward with new member involvement.  It makes me proud to have once been a part of the team.  Although “puppet master” had a nice ring to it ;-) 

As many of you know I served two and a bit terms on the National Board as the BC National Director, a term is three years.  It was time that someone else took the reins and represented the membership of BC at the National Table.  The newly appointed BC National Director is Steve Provost from Untied Rentals, Steve will be a great asset to the National board with fresh ideas and outlooks for the association.  I encourage you all to feel comfortable calling Steve up or emailing him with any concerns that you have with the association or any ideas that the association can look at to make the association better as a whole.  Steve is your voice at the National Table!  Alternatively you can contact Jim Clipperton and he will assist you  / or direct you to the right channel  to help you out.

I am going to miss the phone calls and emails from you, the members of the BC Local, but I will still be around at the meetings / golf tournaments / tradeshows etc , I might be able to actually golf… network… and walk the show floor as a customer!  I look forward to seeing you all at the next event, and feel free to call me at any time!

INCOMING BC NATIONAL DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE


Spring has finally sprung in the BC coast region and I am excited for this upcoming warm season. I want to take a moment to tell you about myself and my journey in the rental industry. I am French Canadian (don’t hold it against me) and I have lived in Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver and finally Chilliwack and have worked in all their markets. Our family calls the Fraser Valley home, more specifically, Chilliwack and it’s where we plan on staying for the foreseeable future. I have been in the rental world for seventeen years now and the time has flown by. The fast paced nature and ever changing environment is something I love about this industry.  Speaking of fast, I just joined the BC board last summer and now I am honoured to have the opportunity to represent our region at a national level.

The CRA BC board is an amazing group of enthusiastic and hard-working people. The trade show at Cloverdale in January was my first show being on the board, and I was truly impressed with the work each volunteer puts in to make everything run smoothly. The prize table, draws and social functions add excitement to the trade shows, and wouldn’t happen without your BC board. I’m looking forward to working with this group into the future, on the show and other local events. 

I had the chance to attend the Rental Show in Atlanta and it was quite the experience. The very size of the show was impressive and equally impressive were the exhibitors and vendors. The time, dedication, and effort that the vendors put in to these shows is first class. I was overwhelmed with the Canadian presence at the CRA hospitality event held at the Hard Rock Café. The sea of familiar faces made me feel at home.  I had an equally great experience at the CRA Prairie show held in Edmonton. It was a huge success and the new location holds promise for many years to come. Donald Trump even graced us with his presence and although we Canadians are a tough crowd when it comes to American politics, Cam Fraser’s impression had us all laughing in the end.

I joined Angie Venekamp at the ARA Show as well as the board of directors meeting and participated as the incoming director for BC. Angie has left me with some big shoes to fill and I am hopeful I can do at least half of the great job she has done. She has gone above and beyond in her role and has helped and contributed in many capacities. Her attention to detail and hands on work is second to none. Do not expect that from me, as men are certainly not as proficient in the detail department. All kidding aside I am excited for the new role as National Director for BC and I look forward to working with you all in the near future. 

My first impression after attending a few shows is fantastic. The hard work and dedication that goes into these shows is unparalleled. I have to say it again, the vendors’ dedication and engagement are the gears of this well-oiled machine. They spent a lot of time away from home during this first quarter attending all the great shows across Canada.

The National Board members are an elite group of professionals that I am proud to be associated with and together we will make a great team.
