What’s the difference between these two pictures?
It’s not the renovation.
It’s the “Joy of Service.”
The entire month of December is considered the “Season of Joy.” Contrary to modern interpretations, it is not because we get something, but because we get to give something of ourselves.
Believe it or not, everyone loves to be the giver. No one prefers to be on the receiving end. No one goes to bed at night happy that they wasted another day. Instead, everyone goes to bed hoping that having lived another day has made a difference somehow, somewhere; if they did, they experience pure joy, day after day.
What if you had the opportunity to make a difference in your life and the lives of others—to feel that joy?
At REACH, we bring people together to feel that joy, and in return, this year, over 400 volunteers provided close to 15,000 hours of service to the community that reclaimed two abandoned homes in SE Roanoke, helped build a community garden in Morningside Park with Roanoke Community Gardens, worked with the Christian Soldiers Food pantry to distribute over two million pounds of food, served meals and provided services through the Rescue Mission, and volunteered with Goodwill, Catholic Charities, Roanoke Valley SPCA, Presbyterian Community Center, Kids Soar, Under the Bridge Ministries, Roanoke city services, and other local community groups.
Feel the joy. Help us remind folks of the joy of serving each other, and see our communities thrive. Go online to www.REACHinRoanokeVA.org/donate to make a one time, monthly, quarterly, or annual donation OR write us a check made out to REACH INC. at 610 Mountain Ave. SW, Roanoke, VA 24016.
Our Goal: $25,000 (7,500 more hours of community service)
In return, we will build community gardens, reclaim abandoned homes, collect and distribute foods, play with children, volunteer at the homeless shelter, clean rivers and parks, put on carnivals and street fairs, dance and sing and laugh, all while learning about civic duty, social justice, community development, personal responsibility, empowerment and JOY.
