REACH Newsletter -- November 2018

Welcome, Michael!

REACH has exciting news to share! We'd like to introduce to you our new Neighborhood Revitalization Project Construction Coordinator, Michael Fox!

Michael began volunteering with REACH to help finish up 709 Stewart Ave. SE only a couple months ago. "REACH is becoming a lifestyle for me. The service philosophy at REACH's core is contagious in the best possible way." We're excited to announce we've officially signed him on as part of the team to serve alongside our volunteers!
Michael has big plans for the two homes on Dale Ave. SE. "Over the better part of the last 10 years, I have driven past and looked at the two houses on Dale, 'Dale Sisters,' and a sinking, sad feeling would come over me. In my mind, I hoped and really wished someone would step up and bring the life back into them. When I found out that I had the opportunity to be part of the group that would not only bring them back to life, but unite a community in the process, it was one of those moments I will never forget."

"We as individuals have the ability to change the world through service to others. We can fight back those sad sinking feelings that blanket not only us, but others in our community by stepping up and choosing not to just keep driving by." If you'd like to learn more, meet Michael, or partner with REACH on those projects, you can REACH him at

On Thursday, October 11, we celebrated a big accomplishment--the completion of our first-ever restored abandoned home, 709 Stewart Avenue in Southeast Roanoke! We'd like to thank everyone for their support and hard work!
Despite the poor weather, there were plenty of warm, friendly faces in attendance. All who came out to the event marveled at the new appliances while smelling the aroma of homemade cookies baking in the oven. Members of First Christian Church provided food and Project Linus quilts, which were displayed throughout the home. Supporters of this Neighborhood Revitalization Project also contributed to a community art project with I Heart SE. Long & Foster Real Estate placed the home on the market.
We're looking forward to this year's #GivingTuesday on November 27th! Stay tuned for our campaign plans and how you can make a difference this #GivingTuesday!

?ru4! What are you for?

A note from our Executive Director, Tim Dayton

It has been a month of horrible events depicting the depth of the anger and hatred facing so many of us in our daily lives. And for a moment I, too, was lost in thought for what I was against.

But then, Casey asked me to write an article for our November newsletter about some of what had happened with REACH in the month of October, and my joy returned as I saw what a difference you all have made in our community and beyond.

My October joys, in no particular order:
  • We celebrated the completion of our first Neighborhood Revitalization Project (NRP) at 709 Stewart Ave.
  • We met over 300 children & adults at the I Love SE Trunk or Treat.
  • We attended the Harvest Festival for the completed Urban Farm and Community Garden at Morningside.
  • We participated in Roanoke’s 5th Annual Cityworks Xpo on the bright future of our cities & towns.
  • We completed our second NRP (except for cleaning) at 1718 Edmund Ave.
  • We added Michael Fox to our NRP team as our part-time NRP Construction Coordinator.
  • We attended intern recruiting fairs at Radford University & Roanoke College and met some great prospects.
  • We have qualified for and may have found our second full-time employee (AmeriCorps State – Office & Site Manager)
    • And, we have qualified for our NRP AmeriCorps State Project Developer (If you are interested, contact us immediately!)
  • We have already surpassed last years numbers in college groups signing up to participate in our Alternative Breaks.
  • We are moving forward with the development of our “Gap Year” Community Transformation Program.
  • We began forming our team and plans for the NRP “Dale Sisters.”
  • I traveled to New England to set up college intern recruiting stations in the greater Boston & Portland areas.
  • I also traveled to Medford, NJ to give thanks for the new kitchen appliances installed in honor of Gordon Curtis in two of our restored homes.
  • Casey spoke at her first official REACH Community presentation.
  • And I got to go to Iceland for my 40th anniversary 😊
And so, I realized I’m not “against” anything. There is no time when we are so busy “being for” so much. But the question remains:

What are you for? ?ru4!
