REACH Newsletter --March, 2019

Welcome back, Grace!

Grace Stewart first began serving with REACH in Spring 2017 as an intern for Alternative Breaks. She enjoyed the experience so much that she returned only a few months later as an intern for most of the summer.

In the middle of her senior year at Radford University, Grace was searching for an internship to finish up her undergraduate career and came across a posting for what is now her AmeriCorps position--the Food Redistribution Specialist.

Grace sees the potential impact REACH can have. "Once REACH has gained more awareness," she stated in an interview, "there will be a huge change in the city of Roanoke."

Grace is passionate about making a difference in the lives of the folks in this community. While serving primarily with the Christian Soldiers Food Pantry, she has the opportunity to engage with the community members, learn how to build and maintain a strong, sustainable nonprofit, and do it all while having fun. Grace's advise to all is this: "You only have one life, so spend it doing what you love."
REACH has a free coffee hour every Monday and Friday from 7:30 am to 9:00 am for the public.
PLEASE COME AND JOIN US FOR A CUP OF COFFEE, A PASTRY, AND A GOOD START TO YOUR DAY.
What are Alternative Breaks?

Instead of hitting the beach for one's Spring Break, middle school, high school, and college students all over the country are hitting a couple hundred nails with a hammer to restore an abandoned home in Roanoke during the months of March and April with REACH's Alternative Breaks program.
Alternative Breaks are designed to allow students the opportunity to volunteer during their vacation and make a difference in the world on a community service-learning trip. This spring, NINE teams of students are traveling to Roanoke to work in community gardens, feed the hungry, care for animals, tutor children, and experience the joy of service.
  • University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Michigan)
  • Farmville Wesley Campus Ministries (Farmville, Virginia)
  • University of Buffalo (Buffalo, New York)
  • Georgia Southern University (Statesboro, Georgia)
  • University of North Alabama (Florence, Alabama)
  • University of California, Sand Diego (La Jolla, California)
  • James Madison University (Harrisonburg, Virginia)
  • Rocky Mount Baptist Church (Rocky Mount, Virginia)
  • Baldwin Wallace University (Berea, Ohio)
We've had three teams of students spend an Alternative Break with REACH already this year! In January, students from Denison University (Granville, Ohio) and the University of Maine (Orono, Maine) spent a full week with us, and in February, first-year students from James Madison University's College of Business (pictured above) spent an entire weekend serving Roanoke for the second year in a row.

We are looking forward to the joy these students will bring to the community through their service. Check our Facebook page for photos, updates, and more later this month!
We still have a few spots lefts for 2019's Summer Service Camp and will be accepting registrations through the month of March!
