LAST LITTER PICK OF THE SEASON
SATURDAY 17 SEPTEMBER FROM 10-12

Meet at the picnic bench at the top of the hill by the walled garden and pond
What3words:

Litter picks and bags provided.  Wear gloves and sensible shoes.
Do join us for a final clean up of the edges and hedges, the parts Veolia doesn't reach.  Dick, with rubbish bag, Denyse with her find - a golf club and Dean of Veolia on his scooter!  A trifle too small for him.
Children welcome
The Peace Grove Trees
Martin Page, Brent's Landscape Architect, who was responsible for the sourcing and emplacement of the Peace Grove trees has kept a keen eye on their progress during the hot dry weather.
Due to the drought he asked Veolia, ie Dean, to water the trees, including the cherry trees, weekly rather than fortnightly.  Dean made a special effort to water just the 'pot' of each tree as the Peace Grove trees were not bare rooted when planted like the cherry trees but in sizeable pots.  Filling the gaiters around the trees only watered around the 'pot' and not into it.
Martin is confident that many of the trees' leaves that might look dead to us are in fact just scorched by the hot sun and that the tree will recover and thrive next year.  See photo above of scorched amelanchier leaves.
It is rare when large numbers of new trees are planted for all of them to survive and he confirmed that any that do die will be replaced.

The asters and rudbeckias are blooming providing some late summer colour along with Sedum 'Matrona', photos below.  We planted a different aster variety last year, Aster dumosus, that is neater and flowers later along with some chrysanthemums that are not yet in bloom hoping to extend the season of interest when the other perennials have died back.  Careful dead heading has allowed some of the other daisy-producing plants to burst back into life after the rain.  But the real star after the rain are the Japanese anemones that we had to water to stop from dying.  They have rebounded with enthusiasm.
And do admire Alyson's sunflowers that she grew from seed by the public loo.  They must be nearly 3m high!!  The new railings have proven a huge success allowing plants along that strip to be protected and grow.  Even the roses to the right of the path to the loo have recovered their verve!
New Pin Boards in the Gladstone Park Notice Boards
Thank you to Brent Council Parks' department for paying for the new green pin boards, to Francine Lawrence of the Friends of Gladstone Park for sourcing them and to Malcolm Hall also a FOGP for his noble effort installing them in his own time.  It was quite a task and much appreciated.  They look very smart
LET'S TALK CLIMATE:  BRENT COUNCIL
Samantha Haines at Brent Council is asking Brent residents to participate as below:
The climate emergency means the way we do things as a council and as a community has to change.  We have launched Let’s Talk Climate: waste and green space to ask for your views on what we can do differently and what you expect from us as we work together towards a cleaner, greener Brent.

We are looking for fresh bold ideas.  Your feedback could change how waste and recycling is managed, how we keep streets clean and how green spaces are maintained.  It will also feed into the delivery of our Climate Strategy and help shape the future of Brent
