Event for Children to Celebrate London Elm Week

FoGP is celebrating London Elm Week by organising a workshop for children to decorate 4 posters of trees, with each one representing a season, either Spring. Summer, Autumn or Winter. Do join us.
Places are limited to 15 children:  To book email:  gladstoneflowersnw@gmail.com
Children will learn about the seasons, leaf shapes and colours and how trees grow whilst their carers enjoy the library cafe.
NEW ELM TREE PLANTED
The elm contributed by Brent Council, Ulmus 'New Horizon', an elm cultivar resistant to Dutch Elm Disease that has wiped out most of the UK's wild elms has been planted in the park along Kendal Road by the Cullingworth Road entrance.
This tree will be joined by another cultivar, Ulmus 'Vada', a more upright tree donated to the park by elms4london. The cost of two years watering of both elms will be paid for by Brent Council. Thank you to Martin Page of Brent.
WALLED GARDEN IS OPEN!  Hoorah!
Enjoy the snowdrops at the entrance and the crocuses in the beds, photo below. The daffodils on the terrace beds are starting to bloom and the tulips will follow soon.
The GGG has planted more snowdrops to add to the show and last week started on pruning the roses, photo below of one of them. They have been mulched and we are hoping for a riot of blooms this year.
The old bowling green beds have had their annual ivy and bramble reduction to stop them taking over the Rosa rugosa shrubs that provide bee friendly flat rose flowers, photo below, and big red hips for the birds. The wisterias, a pink one in the cafe bed and by the loo and a white one in the walled garden have been pruned. And last but not least a thank you to Robert for putting up the wiring across the cafe bed wall and in the walled garden to allow us to train plants up.
COPSE NEWS
David, Dean of Veolia and the 'copsers' have been spreading fresh woodchips along the paths in the copse to prevent muddy patches from becoming slippery and to ensure safe access. Thank you Dean and Veolia for providing the wood chip and wheelbarrows.

REPEAT
Replacements for the Dead Peace Grove and Sakura Cherry Trees

The trees that died last year despite the determined watering of them by Dean of Veolia are being replaced. One new cherry tree variety has been added, Prunus 'Ichiyo', a variety brought over from Japan by Capt 'Cherry' Cunningham, the man who re-introduced into Japan the great white cherry, Prunus 'Tai-Haku', that lines the path between the upper children's playground and the cycle track.
Martin Page, Brent's Principal Landscape Architect, who remains much involved with the trees said that tree death was to be expected in newly planted trees but that it was lower than he had anticipated despite last summer being one of the hottest and driest.
DO PLEASE JOIN EASYFUNDRAISING
IT IS SUCH AN EASY WAY TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE FRIENDS OF GLADSTONE PARK.

For example if you buy anything from John Lewis they donate 2% of the value to the Friends!  These donations help the Gladstone Gardening Group to buy tulips, alliums and other bulbs for spring colour and contribute to the perennial beds in the walled garden.

AND NO LONGER VIA AMAZON SMILE
Amazon have recently announced that they are closing Amazon Smile as a way to raise money for charities from 20 February.
MEMORIAL BENCHES: MORE NEEDED AS WE WOULD LIKE SOME ALONG THE NEW CYCLE PATH AND IN THE PEACE GROVE.   People like to rest, stare at the sun, comfort their baby or just admire the view when walking the park especially along the new cycle track where there is just one bench at present.
Is there a loved one you would like to remember and think about when visiting the Gladstone Park?
