This Holiday Season – Help TiME Give a Future to the Last Remaining Yellow-Tailed Woolly Monkeys of Peru
Yellow-tailed woolly monkeys are one of the rarest monkeys on earth. As their habitat began to slowly disappear in the forests of South and Central America, the number of this rare species dropped dramatically. Suddenly this wonderful creature was threatened with extinction.
In recent years, the only place in the world where the population of yellow-tailed woolly monkeys is increasing is El Toro in the Amazonas region of Peru. Here, the monkey population has increased an encouraging 30 percent, thanks to the intensive efforts of wildlife experts with Neotropical Primate Conservation (NPC).
But the El Toro yellow-tailed woolly monkey habitat is located on privately owned lands, and there is a constant interest in replacing these forests with farms. TiME members from all over the world voted online this year to make the purchase of these lands a top priority.
IN ORDER TO ENSURE A SAFE FUTURE FOR THIS SPECIES, IT IS ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL TO CREATE A RESERVE FOR THE YELLOW-TAILED WOOLLY MONKEYS TO ENSURE THEIR SURVIVAL. BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP.
TiME’s holiday campaign aims to raise $25,000 by January 1, 2017 to purchase several hundred hectares of critical habitat on behalf of NPC, which will own and protect the land in conjunction with the surrounding Yambrasbamba Campesino community.
Alongside gifts to your loved ones this year, consider giving the gift of a more certain future to an entire species of monkeys with which we humans share so much DNA. Your gift to TiME’s end-of-the-year campaign is a way of saying that we humans can share the planet with our fellow monkeys and primates.
Every contribution counts now, but we also need your help in spreading the word. Please tell your friends and family, or forward this email, and come join us on this journey to a better future.
Happy holidays to all our supporters!
