Welcome to this week’s e-news.

Last Thursday evening Leanne and Lauren attended Jacksons Law Firm 140th Anniversary event at their offices in Newcastle and raised a glass to them on such a momentous occasion. We would like to wish all at Jacksons Law all the best for the future. In the meantime, I was guest of ICE North East at their Annual Dinner and Robert Stephenson Awards at the Newcastle Marriott Gosforth Park. I would like congratulate all the winners of the Robert Stephenson Awards and thank Graham Yates, Chair of ICE North East and Penny Marshall, Regional Director for their very kind hospitality and a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

On Friday evening I was a guest of the Built Environment Hub at the Constructing Excellence West Midlands ‘Celebrating Construction’ Awards at the ICC in Birmingham. Congratulations go to all the winners on the evening and we look forward to seeing them again at the Constructing Excellence National Awards in November along with our regional winners.

Tuesday morning was the CECA and Watson Burton briefing seminar at Durham County Cricket Club with Construction Partner, Sarah Wilson. Sarah presented on the common disputes that arise in a NEC contract, how to avoid them and what to do. This was their last seminar in this year’s schedule and we understand they will resume once again in September.

Unfortunately, the G4C ‘Getting your Contracts Right’ seminar with Stephen McLellan of DAC Beachcroft had to be postponed yesterday evening due to Stephen being unwell. We would like to wish Stephen a speedy recovery and apologise for any inconvenience caused. The rescheduled seminar is being arranged and the new date will be advised shortly.

This morning was the ‘Delay and Liquidated Damages’ event in association with Roddy Gordon of DAC Beachcroft at their offices in Newcastle. Roddy discussed time for completion, addressing the need for extensions and consequences of failing to complete on time. The presentation was excellent and the next in the series is being held on 5
th July with further details to be announced shortly.

This afternoon Leanne is attending the Dynamo Build North East event at Crowne Plaza Hotel with guest panellists Rob Charlton, Space Group, John Lorimer, Chair of BIM Academy and more. Leanne is looking forward to the presentations and will update you next week.

Tomorrow evening Leanne and Lauren will be attending the RICS Matrics Summer Ball at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Newcastle with a few of the G4C North East committee members and they are looking forward to catching up with everyone.

I, on the other hand, will be attending the Constructing Excellence South West Conference and Awards tomorrow in Bristol with some of my colleagues from Constructing Excellence. I wish all those shortlisted the best of luck!

Best wishes

Catriona

Asset Management

Time: 8.30am – 11.30am
Venue: TBC, Newcastle upon Tyne
Cost: Free to CENE Club Members, £40+VAT Non Members (Cancellation policy is within 48 hours notice)

Constructing Excellence in the North East Club are delighted to be working with our Constructing Excellence Asset Management Group in delivering you this half day seminar surrounding Asset and Facilities Management on a construction project.

Some say the single most damaging mistake in industry today is the common practice of overlooking asset management concepts during the design, construction and start-up of major new facilities. The global cost of this poor management practice is truly astronomical. New facilities experience excessive unplanned downtime, resulting in excessive costs and loss of critical production due to quality and quantity issues. These losses can be avoided by implementing proper business processes and good operational planning prior to facility start-up.

But, where do we start? Operating practices? Maintenance practices? Design?

At this seminar we will hear from:
- Tom Cudmore of the Constructing Excellence Asset Management Group. In February Constructing Excellence joined Whole Life Plus (WLP+), a project which has secured Innovate UK and EPSRC funding to research how building performance can be improved to enhance worker productivity and well-being to create happier, healthier and more productive workplaces. LCMB is leading the project, and partners include Argent, King’s College London and EMCOR UK who will trial the innovations in their buildings, Oxford Brookes University who are the academic partner, and the British Council for Offices, who along with Constructing Excellence are the dissemination partners. Tom Cudmore from LCMB will talk about the details of the WLP+ project and share the initial research findings from the first quarter, which has looked at the impact of different environmental changes on workplace performance

- Michael Anderson of Esh Facilities

- Richard Farrey of Silverstone Building Consultancy
