Welcome to this week’s e-news.

Last Friday afternoon was First Friday Club held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in association with Watson Burton. It was great to catch up with some of you and welcome many new faces to the networking group. If you would like to sponsor a future First Friday Club, please contact us for further details.

Then on Friday evening we held the Generation4Change North East Awards at the Hilton NewcastleGateshead Hotel and it was great to have over 250 of you there to help celebrate the achievements of young professionals within our industry. I would like to congratulate all who were shortlisted and especially those who were recognised as winners or received a commendation. We would also like to thank all the award sponsors including our headline sponsor the Northern Counties Builders Federation, Atlas Cloud, CIOB North East, Elliott Associates, Jacksons Law, Turner & Townsend, and drinks reception sponsor Northumbrian Water Group for their valued support.

This week has been both busy and exciting as on Tuesday we welcomed our new Administrator, Lauren Proctor, to the CENE team. More details about Lauren can be found in the news article below.

On Tuesday morning we held the legal briefing in conjunction with DAC Beachcroft. The seminar covering ‘Money Claims and Causation’ was delivered by Roddy Gordon, Partner in Construction & Engineering with DAC Beachcroft. The next in the series is on May 19th and details will be available shortly.

On Wednesday morning we launched the North East’s Construction Clients Group with guests Clive Johnson, Head of Health & Safety for Land Securities and Chair of the national CCG and Gren Tipper, CEO of Construction Clients Group. Clive and Gren presented on the history of CCG and what their currently doing. John McGovern, Chair CENE and Head of Asset Delivery at NWG discussed with those attending how the North East can replicate some of these activities.

Today Leanne and I are in London for Constructing Excellence National Clubs Day to discuss how the Clubs and regional networks can work better together and build links between the wider Constructing Excellence movement.

Next week we have two events taking place, on Tuesday we have CECA North East and Watson Burton monthly breakfast seminar and on Wednesday in association with Bond Dickinson, Andrew Clough, solicitor, will be discussing the rise of the ‘smash ‘n’ grab’ adjudications. If you would like to attend we do have a few places available and further details are below.

We will look forward to seeing you soon,

Best wishes

£96 million North East Highway Surfacing Framework Awarded

The North East Procurement Organisation in partnership with the North East Highways Alliance has entered into a four-year framework agreement with thirteen successful contractors, which signals a new more collaborative approach to highways construction.  The collaborative agreement which was led on behalf of NEPO by Darlington Borough Council covers sixteen specialist lots ranging from standard carriageway resurfacing to road markings. The framework, with an estimated annual spend value of £24 million across the region, will aim to implement all the Local Authorities’ annual planned maintenance to principal, non – principal and unclassified road networks.

A pipeline of works has been forecast from the Local Authorities programmes with both direct awards and further competitions emerging in various package sizes.  It is envisaged that the more joined up approach will drive benefits and efficiencies throughout the period of the framework.
The contract will be delivered under the NEC3 Form of Contract and specific KPI’s have been developed to deliver and monitor Social Value in key areas such as Employment & Skills.

The successful contractors are;
  • Bardon (aggregate industries) / Colas / Hanson / Henry Williams / Jointline / JPCS / Kiely Bros. / Miles Macadam / Northumbrian Roads / Rainton Construction / Road Techs / Tarmac / Textone Blast
Jeff Alexander, chair of Construction Alliance Northeast (CAN), an organisation which was recently formed to lobby for fairer procurement methods on behalf of its 500-plus SME member companies, welcomed the approach adopted by NEPO and Darlington Borough Council.  He said:
“It is encouraging to hear about the more collaborative approach to highways procurement which has been adopted in the case of this framework.

“By using local firms with local knowledge, it is possible to provide a greater range of value added benefits.  This is not only good news for the client, but for the regional economy as a whole.”

CENE are delighted to welcome our new member to the team Lauren Proctor who is our administrator and will be overseeing the general running of the office with support to Leanne and I on events.

Let's hear a little bit about Lauren.
Lauren enjoys spending time with family and friends either at the cinema or over a hot chocolate! When at work and also in her spare time she enjoys organising activities or events. She hopes she can be successful within this business and from her first impressions feel she will love working within Constructing Excellence with Leanne and Catriona.

We are delighted to welcome Lauren to the team and feel she has settled in nicely especially last Friday evening at the G4C Awards as it was a bit of a baptism of fire! Having Lauren on board will expand Leanne's and my duties to bring further business in and also seeing our members to provide more benefits and services to the membership.

We will be introducing Lauren to our events next week and if any of you are there please say hello!
