£2.5 billion to be invested in apprenticeship training by 2020

The apprenticeship programme, launched in 2010, has already given 2.9 million people the chance to learn new skills to access fulfilling careers and help boost UK business. The funding will support people of all ages to gain high-quality skills and experience, assisting employers to offer more training opportunities and build a skilled workforce. The government is inviting employers and training providers to have their say on the initial funding proposals to ensure the plan meets the needs of all involved.

Under the plans for the levy the government has proposed that small businesses who can’t pay the levy will have 90% of training costs paid for by the government, assuring those involved. Extra support worth £2,000 per trainee will be available for employers and training providers taking on 16-18-year-old apprentices or young care leavers. Employers with fewer than 50 employees will also have 100% of training costs paid for by government if taking on these apprentices, ensuring every young person regardless of background or ability has the chance to make their first step into work.

Finally, it is proposed to offer more flexibility for employers to retrain individuals even if they possess qualifications prior to starting the programme, as long as they differ slightly. Employers will gain more control and access to higher quality training with the power to determine exactly what training is required and which provider it is sourced from. A new register of training providers will be introduced from April 2017 to improve the link between training providers and employers.
