Welcome to this week’s e-news.

Last Friday afternoon Leanne and I were guests of Muckle LLP at their Afternoon Tea Party where we also got to watch the men’s Wimbledon semi-finals, which as you know were very exciting. We had a fabulous afternoon and would like to thank Muckle LLP for their wonderful hospitality.

This week Leanne and I have been busy out and about seeing a few new Club Members along with catching up with many of our current Members. It has been great to see and hear what everyone is up to. We have also been confirming some of our speakers for the Construction Summit in September, which looks to be a fantastic programme so far, details of this will be announced shortly.

Yesterday we held our annual Clay Pigeon Shoot in association with Forum for the Built Environment at Bywell Grange Shooting Ground in Northumberland. Everyone had a great morning followed by a delicious lunch at the Northumberland Arms. Well done to Jan Rzedzian of Hay & Kilner Solicitors for winning this year’s competition and thank you to Graham Booth, Regional Director FBE, for organising another great event.

This morning we held the Wonder Challenge Final at Northumbria University. This year the schools were given the challenge to create a construction company, research construction careers and develop a project on a brownfield site. We were delighted to award the prize money, kindly sponsored by Northern Counties Builders Federation, to Joseph Swan Academy School. We are currently looking at the 2017 Challenge to fit around one day instead of over a few months and details about this will be announced by September.

This evening is the final in the series of G4C and DAC Beachcroft CPD seminars in Newcastle. This seminar looked at getting your contract right and understanding the basics. I would like to thank Stephen McLellan, Associate, for another great session and to DAC Beachcroft for sponsoring the drinks reception.

Tomorrow Leanne and I are off to Newport for the Constructing Excellence Wales Awards at the Celtic Manor Resort and would like to wish all those shortlisted the very best of luck. This is the last Regional Awards for Constructing Excellence which lead on to the National Final taking place on November 4th in London, please see below for details on how to book your tickets for this prestigious event.

Places are filling up now for the forthcoming Foundation Charity Race Day on August 12th at Newcastle Racecourse which will also feature former Newcastle and Sunderland players, the broadcasting of BBC Radio Total Sport programme and we are delighted that Lady Elsie, Sir Bobby Robson’s widow will be gracing us with her presence on the day. Make sure you don’t miss out on this fantastic event and book your tickets now!

Best wishes

CIC Wonder Challenge – Final

The Construction Industry Council North East Wonder Challenge Final winner was revealed earlier this morning at Northumbria University. Schools from across the North East were given the opportunity to work together as a mini construction company, looking to win the contract to redevelop a chosen ‘brownfield’ area of land. The schools were asked to prepare a bid for the development of a Sustainable housing project for their community looking at community engagement, benefits of bringing a new building to this specific site, costs, planning as well as researching into new technologies and innovation.

The scheme is mainly a link to the huge and diverse construction industry but it also involves team work, graphic design, presentation skills and report production.

We were delighted with this year’s response and thanks to all the schools, judges and companies who supported the challenge. We would especially like to thank the Northern Counties Builders Federation for providing the winning schools with vouchers and monetary prize.

The winning school was Joseph Swan Academy with their team ‘Illumina’ with second prize going to ‘Revive’ at Nunthorpe Academy and the third prize going to 'Padua' Construction at St Anthony's Girls' Catholic Academy.
