Happy St Patrick’s Day everyone!

Well what a busy week Leanne and I have had! Last Friday morning we attended and supported the Launch of the Construction Alliance Northeast (CAN) at Ramside Hall. CAN comprises of the Northern Counties Builders Federation (NCBF), Federation of Master Builders (FMB), National Federation of Builders (NFB) and the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) and has been formed to champion the interests of SME companies within the construction sector.  Their aim is to stem the tide of public sector contracts leaving the region to national firms. There was a great turnout and it was good to hear from Minister for Growth and the Northern Powerhouse, James Wharton MP on how he intends to tackle some of the issues the industry is currently facing.
On Sunday we were invited to Turner & Townsend Down at the Farm event. I understand a fantastic day was had by all and Leanne and I were most sorry we couldn’t make it!

This week Leanne and I have been busy preparing for the G4C Awards and I have to say everything is looking great so we are now counting down the days until the ceremony on April 1st. This will be a truly inspirational evening showcasing the region’s talent so even if you haven’t entered and would like to come along to support our young people at the Awards dinner, please contact Leanne as we only have a few tickets remaining.

On Tuesday morning was the ‘I’ll see you in court – understanding the litigation process’ in conjunction with Sintons Law. Kevin Anderson of Sintons gave a thorough and extremely entertaining explanation of the process which was enjoyed by all attendees. We would like to thank Sintons for a brilliant seminar and for their hospitality. We are holding a Summer Networking Drinks in June with Sintons so keep an eye out for these details coming out to you shortly!

Yesterday evening Leanne and I attended the Women in Property Networking at Tiger Hornsby in Newcastle which was kindly sponsored by KLR Planning and it was lovely to catch up with everyone.

This afternoon is the Construction Industry Networking in Tees Valley sponsored by Muckle LLP at the Brasserie at Hudson Quay and it was great to see so many of you there including lots of new faces. I would like to thank Muckle for their kind sponsorship of this event and the next one will be held in May. If you’re interested in sponsoring one of these events please contact Leanne.

Tomorrow morning Leanne is attending the Kier SCAPE seminar at the Copthorne Hotel to hear more about the framework, how organisations are using it and why they should. I will be attending the BACH meeting to discuss Constructing Excellence with the North East college heads of schools and how we can work better together.

Finally, tomorrow evening we will be attending the CIOB North East annual dinner at the Newcastle Marriott Gosforth Park hotel. If you are attending, please come across to say hello to Leanne and our guests. I will be attending as guest of CIOB NE and will look forward to seeing everyone.

And finally I am delighted to say that there will be a new addition to the CENE team in April and we can’t wait to welcome them on board and for those of you attending the G4C Awards you will get to meet her then.

Best wishes

Cundalls success at the North East Business Awards!

“The first of three awards to be given to Cundall was the Export Award. This was a chance for the company to celebrate its growing overseas portfolio. With 32% of its 2015 turnover coming from overseas projects, the judges remarked that it was Cundall’s truly global reach which swung the voting in its favour.
The second award to be added to the cabinet was the Let’s Grow Award, highlighting rapid growth over the last 12 months. Cundall’s investment in its staff was highlighted, with 164 people joining in 2015, including 42 graduates. The night was given a perfect finish with the final award, the much-coveted Company of the Year. It is an honour to pick up this award, as it is recognition of Cundall’s outstanding performance in the last year.”
Online press coverage:

This month Durham architect and campaigner Mark Siddall of Lovingly Engineered Architectural Practice, more commonly known as LEAP, was in the running for a prestigious national award. The UK Green Building Council’s Rising Star Award recognises outstanding innovation in the building industry.
An elite group of six finalists was drawn from a shortlist of over sixty nominees. Mark was the only architect to make the cut. Other finalists included a property lawyer, a property manager, an economist, a building performance evaluator and an ecologist.

The Rising Star Award does not merely celebrate outstanding innovation in the building industry, it also recognises the role of individuals that act as a catalyst for change in relation to sustainability and environmental performance. Last year Mark’s design for Steel Farm, near Hexham, was named Best Small Project in the UK Passivhaus Awards and in September it was nominated in the Best Value Home, Best Eco Home, and Best Masonry Home categories of the national Build It Awards. Open days at Steel Farm have attracted hundreds of visitors.
