It's a New Year at the Library

Welcome 2020!

We're starting the year with a full month right off the back!
Key dates to note include:
- Tickets start selling for the Summer Reading Club 2020 Raffle on January 6, and we have another awesome prize package this year.
- Folk music duo Hungrytown graces the stacks once more for our Sounds & Stacks live music series.
- The city's big Homeless Resource Day is on January 23. Read more below to find out how you can help.

Plus, regular weekly kids programs make their return on January 6, and adults have TONS of programs just for them this month!

Saturday, January 23
8:00 AM - 2:00 PM at the Longview Exhibit Center

The City of Longview will hold its annual Homeless Resource Day, January 23, 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM at the Longview Exhibit Center Building (1123 Jaycee Dr, Longview, TX 75604, right by the fairgrounds).

The library is a drop-off point for any Homeless Outreach Bag donations/supplies.
Donations will be received up until the day before the event.

We will be happy to assist with unloading any donations!

It’s time for our annual Summer Reading Club raffle fundraiser! This year we have the Ultimate Electronic Prize Package for you to win. 

This includes:

Tickets will start selling on January 6. They can be purchased at the front desk in the library.

Only 600 tickets total will be sold, and will sell up until the winner announcement on February 10, 5:00 PM, or if we sell out completely beforehand. We will call the winner two times.

Winner MUST ANSWER BY THE SECOND CALL to win, or we will draw again.

All proceeds go towards Summer Reading Club funding and helps keep events and programs for the kids entirely free to attend.

The Friends of the Longview Public Library will be set up in the Art Hallway for a book sale January 9 - 11.

  • $0.25 for kid’s books, magazines, and paperbacks.
  • $1.00 for everything else (excluding as marked rare/vintage book and items). All proceeds help benefit YOUR library and library programs.

Hours for each day run 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM.
Cash, check, and card accepted.
Check our Facebook those days for the announcement of special sales (i.e. Fill up a bag/box for $1.00)!

Please welcome back folk duo Hungrytown for our winter Sounds & Stacks event!
They’ll be here to perform live music on Friday, January 10, 6:30 PM.

If you haven’t been to a Sounds & Stacks event yet, we highly encourage you to check it out! The ambience of the lights, music, acoustics and closed library is something not to be missed!

Join us on January 11, 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM to learn some new upcycle projects!

This session will include how to make soda can tab bracelets and easy t-shirt scarves. Supplies will be provided, but we encourage you bring any of your own from home you’d like to use, and get into the spirit of upcycling.

You asked for more trivia, and we’re happy to say that it’s back!
Adults ages 18+ are welcome to come and try their hand at our trivia championship.

Our paint pour tutorial is back by popular demand!
We’ll show you a super easy way to create a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork with supplies you can buy at the store.

Ages 18+. In order to get a supply count, registration is required.
Please feel free to bring 3-4 different colors of 2oz. acrylic paint tubes if you’d like to work in specific color scheme (contrasting colors recommended for best effect, matte and gloss have different effects as well, so please consider that).

True Crime Crew will meet on Thursday, January 30, 6:30 PM for its winter session.

A perfect club for all lovers of mystery, suspense, and true crime!
This month’s topic will be about Charles Manson, his cult followers and the notorious Hollywood murders they committed. Please feel free to bring any discussion materials and questions for the group.

Event is FREE, no registration required. Due to sensitive nature of topics, Ages 18+ only.

Be a part of the Longview's 150 Year Sesquicentennial celebration by recording your memories for our Podcast!

The Library will be recording patron memories to digitize and put onto our Longview 150 Stories Podcast!
These memories will go live on, January 1.
Afterwards we will put them into the library's online digital archive for future generations to enjoy.

If you don’t have the equipment to record your memories, call (903) 237-1346  or email to speak with Leah, and schedule an appointment to come in and have us help record them for you.

Dates to record are January 14, 15, 22, 24, 28, 31.
There will be 30 minute time slots between the hours of 10:00 AM- 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM for the recording interview.

This month's courses are:

January 15 & 16, 10:00 AM - 1:30 PM
  • Computer Basics & Keyboarding I & II:
    A beginner’s class for those who have limited or no knowledge of how to use a computer. Class will show students how to use and operate a keyboard and mouse, navigate Windows, and topics related to internet browsing (how to do searches, look up sites, etc.)

    Students will become acquainted with the QWERTY keyboard layout. Proper technique typing will be talked about Students will also learn about Home Row & keyboard shortcuts. This class is designed for beginning computer users.

January 21 & 22, 10:00 AM - 1:30 PM
  • Basic Excel I & II:
    Introductory course into Microsoft Excel that focuses on database entry and formula input to make spreadsheets and workbooks.

January 23, 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM
  • Internet Basics:
    Beginner’s course on how to navigate the internet and access it’s features. Ex. How to access a search browser, set up an email account, etc.
January 29 & 30, 10:00 AM - 1:30 PM
  • Word Basics I & II:
    Introductory course into Microsoft Word that focuses on how to create, format, and use the tools needed to create a word document.

No more deposits on Disney movies!
We've started the new year with a big change. Starting January 1 patrons can now check out Disney movies without having a $20 deposit on their account!
They will remain located on the children's DVD shelves.

Please take good care of them, and have fun remembering the magic!
