Dear Fellow Members

What a summer it has been! I can't remember a Cowes Week with better sailing weather and the fair conditions have enabled us to enjoy ourselves on and off the water right through the summer. I made a full report on our activities at the AGM and you can find a copy of it here, but I would like to mention a few highlights.

On the water, the Redwings and BODA have both had active and successful seasons and a wide range of trophy winners. BSDC has run a series of popular and successful courses and I have been receiving very favourable comments on the high standard of instruction this year. Congratulations and thanks to Daniel and all those involved. Thanks also to Andrew Eddy for masterminding and running the successful J70 weekend for 18-30 year olds: this will be repeated and built on following very positive feedback from participants.

Off the water, we have had a memorable season by any standards under the able leadership of our tireless Rear Commodore (House), Lisa, with the Bembridge Ball, which was raising funds in aid of the Boulton and Paul Building, as the pinnacle and an evening those of us lucky enough to attend will not forget. A huge thank you to her and to Dorian Campbell, our Rear Commodore (House) elect, who also played a key role in making the ball happen. I am delighted to report that the Ball, themed with a 'Hint of Rio' made a profit, which will go towards the extensive renovations required on the Boulton & Paul building. We were sad to lose the services of Mandy, our chef, at the end of August; she leaves us with our best wishes.

None of our on-water or off-water activities could have happened without the dedication and support of our staff under Daniel's leadership. While we have been enjoying ourselves, they have had a long, hard summer making it happen, and they have done it with a smile. It is that time of year and I do hope that you will all show your appreciation for their dedication and hard work by contributing to the staff fund. You can do so by completing the form here, by ringing the Office or by putting your name on the form on the Notice Board.

Finally, I would like to thank you all for your participation and support over the summer. We have a really great Club and I hope that you have all enjoyed it as much as I have this summer.

Best wishes

Racing Report
(22nd - 29th August)

On Wednesday morning five One-Design helms lined up for the Burrows single handed trophy in the light Northerly breeze. Robin Joy in No 10 was first off the moorings with Sophie Ross in No 11 and James Row in No 8 close behind and Martin Bonham in No 2 & Jos Coad in No 3 somewhat later! After some close racing initially with Robin, James developed a substantial lead as the breeze fluctuated; Sophie’s luck held and she overtook Robin to finish second..

August at BSC
What a wonderful summer we have had here in Bembridge, with beautiful weather, balmy evenings and a buzzing atmosphere here at the Club.
It was fantastic to see so many of you here for the summer.

We had three very successful Cadet Weeks, with what must be a record of only 2 days of foul weather to contend with, which meant plenty of time on the water for all the Cadets.
Bembridge Ball
Was a huge success which was enjoyed by well over 400 of you and your guests. Thanks go to the Members of the Ball Committee for working so hard to ensure a fabulous time was had by all. We are also very Grateful for Members' patience, understanding and cooperation with regards to the disruption to the dinghy parking area at the front of the Club during this period. Head over the the web gallery to see more pictures of the evening.
The morning after the night before: Sunrise on 14th August 5.30am after the Ball clean down.
BSC Regatta and Mariquita Film Night
For the first time in history both days of the BSC Regatta had to be eventually cancelled with only the dinghy racing on Friday taking place Click Here to see the results. Saturday saw no keelboat racing as the windy weather increasingly got worse as the day went on. Prize giving was held at the Club on the Saturday for the winners of the dinghy racing.

On what would have been the second day of the BSC regatta, Bembridge based photographer and film maker, Ben Wood, came to show his final Marquita film which was shot in the Solent during the summer of 2015. The evening proved to extremely successful and was enjoyed by over 80 people.

Backgammon Tournament
A big thanks once again to Norman Marshall for organising this summer’s Backgammon Tournament. After 2 rounds of backgammon each consisting of 5 games, a quarter, semi and final playoff the fabulous Trophy was won by Sarah Marshall with Miranda Devas coming second. Congratulations to both women for making the final.
Mallorca Cruise in Company
Members had a fabulous time sailing the Mediterranean sea on the cruise in company to Mallorca from 20th-27th August. Thanks to Mark Grzegorczyk for organising this, we have heard wonderful reports. Head over to the website gallery for more images.

Shrimps Week
Congratulations to Queen Shrimps; Laura Watson, Emily Lyle and Mel Clegg for organising a very successful Shrimps Week with a full house of 57 shrimps accompanied by their families. The weather for once lived up to all expectations and a huge range of activities were held both in and outdoors. The finale was on the Thursday evening with a supper for the parents and a chance for them to let their hair down.
Scow Week
Thanks to Ros Pollock for her tireless work in organising a very well attended Scow Week. The fabulous weather resulted in loads of water time for both beginners and experienced scow sailors. Activities ranged from the Lobster Lunch at the Lifeboat View on the first day, dinner at the Club to a picnic in Priory Bay and ended with a well-deserved Pimms Prize Giving on the Thursday.
