Dear Members,
Another successful illusion season has come to an end and our keelboat season is now under way.

I would like to thank you all for the magnificent response to my request for support in objecting to the harbour company's proposed Lawful Development Certificate, which posed a significant threat to sailing and our access to navigable water. We now await the Council's decision on this.

As a reasonably recent convert to Friday night suppers in the Club, I would like to recommend them wholeheartedly to you. it is a convivial way to start your weekend in Bembridge without having to worry about catering. In future we will have a "click" facility in the email regarding Friday night specials which will not commit you to be there, but will enable the kitchen to deliver a better service by getting a feel for numbers and preferences in advance.

Wishing you all a happy sailing season,

Last month, we saw the summer sailing season begin, with the start of the BOD racing programme, and the end of the Illusion season.

Members celebrated Her Majesty the Queen's 90th birthday with the monthly lunch and a walk through the bluebells at Knighton. We have seen some most peculiar weather in Bembridge, from glorious sunshine to hail and, to the shock of all the thoroughly southern Island residents, we even saw some snow!

Tickets for the Bembridge Ball, which will be raising funds in aid of the restoration of the Boulton and Paul Building went on sale in April and are selling fast! With just 77 full tickets and only 31 under 30 tickets remaining at the time of writing. This years theme is black tie with a hint of Rio, and it is shaping up to be a wonderful evening!

Illusion and BOD Sailing Report 23rd & 24th April

Reasonable sailing conditions, certainly on Saturday, so a pity that there were only three One-Designs out racing. Their first race saw No 11 helmed by Oliver Nainby-Luxmoore getting away from No 7 helmed by Norman Marshall and No 8 helmed by James Row. With the breeze dropping slightly on the second round, James managed to get ahead of Norman and although he closed up on the leader he was still a couple of minutes behind at the finish. The second race was limited to one round and Oliver in No 11 again got ahead and was never caught; James in No 8 was again second with Norman in No 7 finishing about a minute behind.

Nine Illusions meanwhile raced in the harbour for the penultimate trophy of the season, the St George's Day Trophy, which traditionally has four races with no discard. The first race saw Mark Downer, Bruce Huber and Julia Bailey with little between them on the first two rounds, however Julia managed to get ahead on the third round as Mark dropped to third place.
