HANT Bulletin: August 2017

HANT has been continuing its campaign since the last Bulletin with letters to the press, street stall in Inverness, distributing new leaflets and stickers and planning next Public Meeting.

The new leaflets have been used at the Inverness Street Stall (29 July), Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival (thanks to Greenpeace) and at the Justice not War Hiroshima Commemoration at Bught Park and River Ness (5 August 2017)

New leaflets and car stickers

If any supporter would like one or more leaflet or car sticker please e mail

HANT has shared press items relating to NDA (Nuclear Decommissioning Authority) and SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) reports which highlighted the deteriorating safety record at Dounreay

Given that most nuclear accidents happen when materials are being used this confirms HANT's concerns relating to transport of nuclear waste and the disastrous effects on local populations in the event of accidents or terrorist attacks

Dounreay: HMS Vulcan

The magazine Private Eye no. 1450 (11-24 August 2017) had an interesting article about HMS Vulcan at Dounreay

This is where the nuclear reactors for Royal navy submarines were tested - it is now being decommissioned and more spent fuel / waste will be transported to Sellafield

The article refers to the leak from the PWR2 reactor at Vulcan leaked low level radioactivity into its coolant water which was kept secret and only revealed in the House of Commons by the Defence Secretary Philip Hammond after SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) became aware of an increase in radioactive gases around Dounreay

We'll publish the whole article on HANT website or facebook
