Briefing for Rakhine Advisory Commission

Members of the Rakhine Advisory Commission, chaired by Kofi Annan, invited MCRB and other non-governmental and civil society organisations to brief them on economic opportunities and challenges in Rakhine State on 16 January, prior to their visit to Kyaukphyu. MCRB briefed the Commission on Rakhine’s positive and negative attributes for attracting investment, current regulatory reforms with an impact on investment, and prospects and issues concerned with the oil and gas, and tourism sector.

Sector-Wide Impact Assessment (SWIA) Evaluation

MCRB has conducted four Sector-Wide Impact Assessments (SWIAs) in Myanmar on the Oil and Gas, Tourism, ICT and Mining sectors. In order to assess the effectiveness of the SWIA methodology both in Myanmar and potentially for use elsewhere, and its impact, MCRB is conducting an internal evaluation of the Centre’s Oil and Gas SWIA, and seeking views of relevant stakeholders. Sustainable Tourism in the Myeik Archipelago and Tanintharyi Region

Following December’s multistakeholder workshop in Dawei, Fauna and Flora International (FFI) and MCRB are providing input into the newly founded Tanintharyi Tourism Development Committee headed by Serge Pun to encourage sustainable tourism in the Myeik Archipelago and Tanintharyi Region.

FFI and MCRB have identified the immediate need for a tourism zoning plan to protect the most sensitive areas damaging from hotel development, while ensuring that ecotourism including diving can support conservation. Discrimination Briefing Paper

MCRB’s next Briefing Paper for business will be on Discrimination in the workplace. It will cover discrimination against women, ethnic and religious minorities, people with disabilities, and LGBT, and will aim to provide best practice examples and recommendations to companies. Multistakeholder Action on Corruption

MCRB’s Programme and Communication Officer Phyu Phyu Zin is participating in the Regional Meeting on the Fast-Tracking Implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) on 2-3 February in Bangkok. This conference seeks to build and foster partnerships and create a regional platform to fast track the implementation of the in support of Sustainable Development Goal 16 in Southeast Asia. MCRB is interested in hearing from companies, international organisations and civil society who are interested in combatting corruption, to build a network. Tour of the IBTC Distillery

On 23 January, the MCRB Team made a field trip to the International Beverages Trading Co (IBTC) distillery in Hmawbi to learn about their safety processes, labour issues and community engagement. We are grateful to IBTC for the mutual learning opportunity.
