We are so thankful to return to on-campus living, learning, and engaging with one another after two years of remote learning. We are in our second week of classes, and students, faculty, and staff are embracing the many aspects of campus life. Join us on Tuesday, September 13, at 5 p.m. C.T. for the Fall 2022 Convocation, which will take place in the Fine Arts Room of the Susie McClure Library.
Convocation provides an opportunity at the start of each academic year for the entire ABC community come together to reflect on the way forward and how we can work together to carry out the College’s mission.

The Convocation address will be delivered by Rev. Dr. Johnny H. Flakes III, senior pastor of the Fourth Street Missionary Baptist Church in Columbus, GA, and a member of the American Baptist College Board of Trustees. Among his many honors is recent recognition as a recipient of the 2022 Faith-Based and Humanitarian Award from Diversity Programs and Services at Columbus State University.

Helping Faculty and Staff Achieve Work-Life Balance

The next session in the ABC “Coming Back from COVID-19” Lunch and Learn series, on Monday, August 29 from noon-1:30 p.m., will focus on Achieving Work-Life Balance in the Midst of COVID-19. The discussion will be led by Dr. Andre Bean, program director of the men’s initiative at Tennessee State University.
The “Coming Back from COVID-19” Lunch & Learn series is just one example of how ABC is supporting the campus community in the new post-COVID environment. The activity is paid for with funding provided by the U.S. Government as part of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund Act.

Future Leaders Tour Campus
|
|
Approximately 20 students in grades 8-12 from the Milwaukee, WI, area visited the American Baptist College campus in early August. The group, from the Black Leaders Acquiring Collective Knowledge Summer Experience, was chaperoned by six adults.
The tour was coordinated by Tamara Young, admissions senior recruiter, and led by ABC student Mondale Smiley, who made sure the students were well-versed on American Baptist College, its history and its future. It is students like these who will be molded at ABC to be leaders of tomorrow.

The fitness center, located in the Lewis and Scruggs Conference Center, is open Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m. The center will be open on Saturdays from 9-11 a.m. (beginning September 10.)

Equipment available for rental during fitness center hours includes basketballs and soccer balls, corn hole board and bags, and jump ropes.

(Social Justice, Equity, Advocacy, and Leadership) Initiative uses an interdisciplinary and justice-lens approach to weave applied scholarship, biblical liberation ethics, and theology to achieve justice outcomes for the well-being of oppressed communities. Rev. Yolande W. Ford
May 8, 1929 ~ August 11, 2022
Rev. Yolande W. Ford was the mother of former American Baptist College Board of Trustee member Rev. Diane Ford Dessables.
God's faithful servant, Rev. Ford — who devoted her life to loving and serving those most in need — died peacefully at her home in Montgomery County, Maryland. She was 93.

Pastor Harold T. Shannon
March 30, 1941 ~ July 22, 2022
Pastor Harold T. Shannon passed away at his Nashville home after a lengthy illness. A U.S. Army veteran, Shannon attended American Baptist College and was employed as a full-time pastor for a number of years. He was 81.

American Baptist College has survived and thrived for 97 years. Established out of a desire to train African American preachers, it now is a full-fledged Historically Black College/University and offers both Associate's and Bachelor's degrees. Nestled on the “Holy” Hill in North Nashville, this College is a treasured institution in teaching, guiding and developing leaders of social change for the 21st century and beyond. Our work places a SEAL (Social Justice, Equity, Advocacy, and Leadership) on the world.
