Planning for prosperous future for region

A new single planning scheme for our region is back on council’s agenda.

We’re working on finalising the Draft Mackay Region Planning Scheme to resubmit to the State Government for approval to adopt.

It will supersede three existing schemes in our region – the Mackay City Planning Scheme 2006, the Sarina Planning Scheme 2005 and the Mirani Shire Plan 2007.

Tapping into success

The accolades keep flowing for our Water and Waste Business.

We followed our recent 2016 National Award for Excellence in Local Government with recognition from the International Water Association (IWA).

Our “Transformation of a Water Business” submission won the IWA’s prestigious Project Innovation Award in the operations and management category overnight Wednesday.

Focus on arts, culture

We have a clear path along which to steer our local arts and cultural development for the next five years.

After extensive consultation, we’ve adopted the 2016-2020 Arts and Cultural Plan.

The consultation process involved community brainstorming sessions and online discussion groups, which attracted more than 400 members, as well as survey data.

Helping clean up beach

We’re helping coordinate a community clean-up this Saturday after tiny Styrofoam balls littered a Slade Point beach.

Staff from our Natural Environment team have been onsite this week helping members of the community, vacuuming and raking up the bean bag balls.

We’ll be on site between 7am and 10am on Saturday and will supply bags, rakes, vacuums, gloves, water, sunscreen, safety induction, and disposal of rubbish.

We encourage people to bring their own gloves and water bottles.  Participants will be required to wear closed-in shoes, sun-safe clothing and a hat.

The meeting point will be the park area off Ocean Avenue.

We’re giving fish
a helping hand

We’re helping make the Gooseponds become even more fish-friendly.

As a popular migration area for a number of commercial and recreational fish species, it is vital that fish are able to move freely through this area.

We will be remediating the fishway located downstream from Willetts Road at the Gooseponds next week.

Don’t free Nemo
into our water

Still on fish, and we’re reminding residents to avoid releasing pet fish into the local water network.

The warning comes after a new fish species was discovered in Glenella.

Three Convict Cichlids (Amatitlania sp) were detected in the lake at Northview Gardens as part of a pest fish monitoring program.
