Weekend to remember in September

After organising the successful digital event Mackay Festival Sessions last month, Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre staff are looking forward to hosting their next big event.

September Weekender will feature three events over three days from September 25-27. The event will see people back through the doors of the MECC or seated on the lawns outside the facility to watch all the entertainment on the big screen.

September Weekender includes the family-friendly show Chores on Friday, September 25, party-starters Club Briefs on Saturday, September 26, and Mackay’s very own Karen Jacobsen on Sunday, September 27.

Help shape our future

Council’s Connecting Mackay website has a fresh, new look! This online project hub is a place where residents can share their ideas and learn about projects that are happening in our region!

And, if you register on Connecting Mackay before September 30 you can go into the draw to win an iPad. While you’re there, why not sign up to be a panel member and help shape our future by completing three surveys about our region each year?

Recycled glass road project a success

Recycled glass bottles and jars from Mackay households have been put to good use in a local road rehabilitation project.

Council supplied 320 tonnes of crushed glass from its Materials Recovery Facility which was mixed with gravel to regrade and top up the 1.3km of road from the Peak Downs Highway to the Hogan’s Pocket Landfill site.

Despite several high rainfall periods and regular use by heavy vehicles accessing Hogan’s Pocket Landfill, the road has shown no signs of corrugation and the project has been hailed as a success.

Commit to fit this spring

Mayor Greg Williamson and councillors are challenging residents to get active and shake off the COVID blues.

Mackay Regional Council and Star 101.9 have partnered together for a Spring Fit campaign and council has taken it a step further by creating a personal health challenge. Mayor Williamson said residents could take the health challenge by registering on the council website and setting a personal health goal.

To provide some extra motivation, there’s more than $2000 in prizes up for grabs as part of the health challenge, thanks to Star 101.9 and City Fitness as well as six Fitbits, which have been donated by Harvey Norman.

Lookout works
back on track

Work on the North Mackay Rotary Lookout upgrade has resumed following delays due to COVID-19.

Social distancing restrictions meant Ergon Energy had been unable to complete necessary powerline replacement works, placing the project on hold. Contractors returned to site this week to resume construction works now that Ergon Energy has completed those necessary works.

Council estimates that construction will continue until mid-November, weather permitting. This project is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Building our Regions program.

ASSI community acknowledged

Twenty years ago, Australian South Sea Islanders were officially recognised as a distinct cultural group by the Queensland Government through a signed recognition statement. This historic document recognised the injustices and discrimination this community suffered for over a century.

Mackay is home to the largest population of Australian South Sea Islanders and this week council has been recognising their contributions to our region by flying their flag proudly beside the council building, colouring the fountain blue and lighting up the council administration building in the colours of the ASSI flag. A Sweet Anarchy - White Gold Banners Display has also been on show in the City Centre and was supported through a council RADF grant.
