Mackay water wins international silver

Just one vote was all that separated Mackay and the winner of the best tasting tap water in the world title.

Judging for the 30th annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting was held in West Virginia, USA on Sunday.

Water from council’s Marian Water Treatment Plant was awarded the silver medal, one vote behind winner California.

“Drone swarm” a possibility as council trials new mower

Council have been trialling a new drone lawn mower at our Paget depot for the last six weeks to determine if it could be used to assist our mowing crew.

The device mows lawns unassisted and could boost council's efficiency in maintaining public areas, especially in the wet season when grass is growing at a rapid rate.

WATCH THE VIDEO > Manager of Parks, Environment and Sustainability Richard Brown explains more about the trial in the video above.

Target shooting returns to Mt Vince Rifle Range

The first shots since 2017 will be fired at Mt Vince Rifle Range last Sunday.

Council helped secure the future of the rifle range when it agreed to purchase the 170-hectare site from the Department of Defence in 2018 for the nominal price of $1.

Without the off-market purchase, the site would have remained closed to shooters as it was among surplus assets being disposed of by the Department of Defence.

The transfer to council was approved about 12 months ago and Queensland Police Service (QPS) has now approved the shooting range to resume operations after conditions were met.

Asbestos disposal

Due to a couple of incidents of incorrect handling and disposing of asbestos in the region, council is reminding residents about correct asbestos disposal practices.

It is illegal to dispose of asbestos waste in domestic garbage bins.

You also cannot dispose of asbestos at any of council’s rural transfer stations.

Asbestos loads of less than 175kg must be wrapped appropriately and disposed of at the Paget Waste Management Centre and loads larger than 175kg must be hauled to Hogan’s Pocket Landfill and must be pre-booked via council’s online customer request form.
