The CTE will be offering a range of programs and services this August — some remote, some in person — to help you get ready for the new academic year.

Register Now for Course Prep Retreat

Due to the popularity of January’s Course Preparation Retreat, we’re excited to offer this program again from August 9-12, 2021. This four-day virtual retreat will provide a structured opportunity for instructors to work on preparing their courses in conversation with colleagues. The majority of time each day will be dedicated to independent work by participants, bookended by gatherings over Zoom to share ideas and get feedback.

All BC faculty and Teaching Fellows are welcome to participate. Additional details and registration information can be found on the CTE website. Space is limited, so we encourage you to indicate your interest by July 30.

Back-to-School Workshops & Drop-Ins

Throughout August, we’ll be offering workshops focused on general teaching topics as well as specific instructional technologies. If you are new to BC’s tech tools, or want to make an early start, we’re offering a number of remote workshops via Zoom in early August. And then later in the month, we’re holding a series of in-person workshops at the CTE (O’Neill 250) on topics specific to our fall context. Click on the links below to register.

Faculty Reflections on Last Year

Earlier this summer we launched a project to document your experiences teaching during the past year and to surface what you’ll be taking with you into future semesters. We’re accepting contributions all summer, if there’s anything you’d like to share with your colleagues: new teaching practices that revitalized your pedagogy, surprising moments of joy and connection within the struggle to adapt to previously unimaginable teaching contexts, methods you used to accompany and empower students as they encountered systemic injustice, etc.

We’re interested in hearing what you most want to share and contributions of any length are welcome. We’ll release a resource in August that puts your reflections in conversation with one another as we look forward to the fall semester. Contact Kim Humphrey with any questions about this project.

Getting Help with Tech Questions

If you’re looking for support with questions about instructional technologies, consider the following resources:

  • Need a quick phone call or chat exchange about a basic tech question? Contact BC LMS Support
  • Need an overview of a tool you’re considering? Come to a workshop or view a recording (typically posted within a week after the workshop is offered)
  • Need to talk through an individual tech question? Register for a drop-in or, if you have a schedule conflict, contact us to arrange an individual consultation.
  • Prefer to investigate questions on your own time? Explore our resources.

Not sure where to start? We’re always happy to hear from you at centerforteaching@bc.edu.

Lecture Capture 'Opt Out'

As indicated in BC Forward, this fall “classes scheduled for rooms equipped with Lecture Capture will continue to be recorded and linked to Canvas by default," to cover occasional needs for students to work remotely. Recordings are hidden by default and made available only by instructors as they choose to. See the CTE's information on making recordings available, and contact centerforteaching@bc.edu for assistance.

Graduate Student Teaching Conference

This year’s Graduate Student Teaching Conference will be held via Zoom on Friday, August 20. Similar to last year, the conference will include a faculty panel as well as four graduate student panels: Experiences of Teaching Assistants, Experiences of Teaching Fellows, Experiences of Underrepresented & International Instructors, and Teaching as an Ally. Registration will open in August (see our August newsletter for more information). Contact Francesca Minonne with any questions.
