WHY I SHOP AT THE CO-OP

Gloria  Lloyd shares her reasons and tips for shopping at the Co-op.

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I moved to Fredericksburg with my husband Bob 21 years ago. The idea was to retire. However, when I was offered a job at Mary Washington Hospice as a bereavement counselor, I accepted with joy and worked for twelve meaningful years. Thirty years ago I chose to eat a plant-based diet.  The choice aligned with my commitment to the environment and my health. I am the mother of five, grandmother of eight. In September I will be a great-grandmother!

When did you first hear about the Co-op?

Six years ago, when it was an idea/vision, I became a founding Food Co-op board member.  So amazing to be part of the evolution from idea/vision to a beautiful store.

What are your favorite products at the Co-op?

Bob’s favorite is the vegan corn beef -- he thinks it is the best he has ever had (including the animal version). My favorites are the bulk bin items.  It’s great to take my jars and fill them with beans, oats, rice, popcorn, etc.

What do you love most about the Co-op?

The sense of community; shopping and attending events with co-owners who share a common bond of supporting local producers; and the commitment to sustainability. We are unique -- where else would you find volunteers willing to take donated t-shirts and make them into eco-friendly reusable bags for Food Co-op customers?

Have you ever made a suggestion to the Co-op and what was it?

My favorite tofu is the one made at Twin Oaks Farm. I drove to Charlottesville to buy it. Now we have it in Fredericksburg at our Co-op!

What advice would you have for someone thinking about checking out the Co-op?

Shopping at the Food Co-op is fun, especially discovering new and different products. Add to the pleasure by bringing a friend. Remember, if you forget your reusable bag, request a free t-shirt bag.

SIXTH ANNUAL MEETING
of the
FREDERICKSBURG FOOD COOPERATIVE

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2021
3:00 - 4:30 PM

Central Rappahannock Regional Library, Fredericksburg Branch
1201 Caroline Street, Fredericksburg

What a year! Our long-awaited community-owned grocery opened its doors on April 1st. We now have nearly 2400 owners whose financial support made the store possible and whose patronage will help ensure the financial success of the store.

The next big event on our cooperative agenda is the Food Co-op Annual Meeting.  This will be our Sixth Annual Meeting. It will take place on Saturday, September 11 at the Central Rappahannock Regional Library, Fredericksburg Branch from 3:00 to 4:30 pm. At the meeting you will hear about the past year's highlights along with the financial results of store operations to date and lastly, but not least, the results of the Board of Directors election.

One of the many benefits of being a Food Co-op owner is that you can help shape the vision for the store, including its involvement with the community. How can you do this? One way is to make sure you vote for the Board members who will best represent your values and ideas. Another way is to run for a seat on the Board. Each year, three of the nine Board seats are up for election. If you are an owner, you are entitled to run. Please note that only one member of an owner household can run and serve on the Board at one time.

If you are interested in running, now is the time to let the Elections Committee know. The deadline for nominations is Thursday, August 12. You can let the committee know that you are interested by emailing committee chair Angie Noll or replying to this email.

Everyone who attends the Annual Meeting will receive a $6 coupon for use at the store. This represents the six years the organization has been in existence. The meeting will also feature delicious snacks and drinks from our Co-op.

Here is hoping to see you at the Annual Meeting on September 11!
