New Hope United Methodist Church Leadership Structure
While somewhat different than many longtime United Methodists may remember our structure isn’t unique; rather it is has been adopted by many UMC across Florida when approved by the District Superintendent and by a vote of the Charge Conference, which we accomplished in May 2017.
This team has the legislative responsibility to oversee New Hope UMC. This team is made up of a number of laity, staff members, and pastors. We anticipate each leader will be in alignment with and the stewards of our:
Mission- to make more and better followers of Jesus Christ
Vision- to be Rooted in God’s Word, Renewed by the Holy Spirit, and Reaching out with the love of Jesus in the community and world
Values- love Jesus, care about all people, follow God’s guidance, seek to live out truth with grace, work in teams and value everyone’s input, and are open to taking risks and making bold decisions.
The LT is responsible for making really big decisions (for instance, adopting a new campus, initiating the name change, approving a Capital Campaign) brought by the Executive Team or the Operational Team. The LT engages in prayerful discernment about ways to strengthen and protect the unity of New Hope around issues of ministry and mission strategies, theology, and the future of this church.
Executive Team (ET)
This is a task team of laity and the Senior Pastor and is made up of three functions vital in our life together: Trustees, Finance, and Staff-Parish Relations; that is, property and facility management, how we raise enough funds to pay for everything we are called to accomplish with God’s help, and issues related to staffing. This group handles many of the day to day practical concerns that need immediate attention.
Operational Team (OT)
The OT does the adaptive work of New Hope, which means we ask what our unique challenges as a church are today and what challenges we anticipate in the years to come. The OT has authority, but no power; that is, this Team brings new initiatives and proposals to the LT or the ET for formal approval, and is comprised of laity and pastoral staff. The OT meets 8 hours per month with the help of a ministry coach from Spiritual Leadership Incorporated (SLI), retired UMC Bishop Al Gwinn. This team helps all our ministry teams be in alignment with our mission, vision, and values as well by seeking to develop fruitful systems and strategies and create generative teams as we use what is called “the L3 model” of loving, learning, and leading. It also serves as the Leadership and Nominations Development Team responsible for discerning, developing, and deploying new leaders.
Building Team (BT)
We currently have a BT, and we look forward to the day when this ad hoc committee will no longer be necessary! For now, however, this group, under the authority of the LT, has the primary responsibility for everything related to the building of our new Social Hall.
There are many other opportunities to be a leader at New Hope by…leading something! We have all kinds of additional ways to serve and lead by being on any one of a number of other teams, for instance, the Connect Team, Missions Team, Connect Group Leader, United Methodist Women or Men, Children or Student Ministry Team, etc.
