Sitework for the clubhouse started on Wednesday.

This is an exciting time for Morehead City Country Club members.
The time is now to build a clubhouse members will be proud of!

The clubs focus on the new clubhouse has been keep the current atmosphere the same,
but at the same time give opportunities for fine dining and formal events. 
The clubhouse will be traditional in overall style and offer a with a truly unique rooftop area.
The rooftop area will be the perfect place to grab a drink with friends,
sit back and watch live music, enjoy dinner inside or out while watching the sunset.
 However, quite possibly the most fun of the rooftop area will be watching fellow members trying to navigate the difficult 9th & 18th holes!

Frequently asked questions:

In the past, we were told there would not be membership fee increases or assessments; what has changed?
The Board of Directors is a representative sample of the membership comprised of men and women from a variety of age groups.    The Board voted unanimously to undergo a membership dues restructuring which resulted in the increases.  In recent years, the Board of Directors has worked diligently to avoid increases.  Increases have been avoided through the Phase I course renovation and Phase II improvements, including pool and buildings associated with the pool.  Despite extensive hurricane damage in 2018 and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Board did not increase membership fees.  In fact, over the last 10 ½ years, the Club has been able to work without fee increases.  Decisions leading to an increase come from several factors, beginning with the Board deciding to cap membership.  Past Boards have been able to increase membership to offset increases in operating and maintenance expenses.  The current Board determined this method of avoiding fee increases is no longer feasible as participation on the course along with pool and Clubhouse have greatly increased in recent years.  Since the last membership fee increase, Club operating, and maintenance expenses have increased by over $1,000,000.  The Board is not willing to reduce expenses, which would lower quality.  Additional discussion centered around the desire for the membership dues structure to become more equitable.  The old membership fee structure has 27 categories, with 21 of these structures being considered grandfathered rates.  Restructuring significantly cuts the number of membership categories bringing the Club closer to a more equitable status amongst all active members.  The addition of the future capital fund will assist Morehead City Country Club in saving money for future projects.  Future projects to include but not limited to course improvements such as beautification, irrigation, drainage, tree program and cart paths.  Additional needs include renovated or new bathrooms on the course and maintenance facility upgrades.  The future capital fund is considered a capital contribution and is not taxed as income.  The Club was incorporated as a C-corp when it was formed in the early 50’s, meaning the Club is taxed up to 39% of total net income after depreciation.  The Club has investigated changing to being a tax-exempt Private Club under IRS code section 501 c7.   To do this, the Club would have property reassessed from the property value in the early 1950’s.  The Club's accounting firm PBMares LLP has advised that this would cost the Club over $1 million in tax due at the time of conversion.  Because of the looming tax burden, the Club has been unable to build a  substantial cash reserve without paying a significant percentage of profits to taxes. 
The addition of the clubhouse capital fund has been included to assist in completing Phase III of Club renovations, which is the new Clubhouse.  Discussions concerning this fund centered around the need to make sure the Club would be able to complete Phase II without coming back to the membership for additional increases.  The Board is focused on completing Phase III improvements in a timely manner with a goal of being in the new Clubhouse in the first half of 2023.  The Board determined the needs of the current and future members for the future Clubhouse.  The Board is not willing to sacrifice on this project as the feeling is to complete the project to the best of the Club’s ability to meet every member’s high expectations.  This will be a project not only the current membership will be proud of,  but it will assist in ensuring the long-term success of Morehead City Country Club.

Morehead City Country Club has and always will focus on value.  When evaluating the Club’s new membership fee structure, the Board of Directors determined the Club will continue to remain an outstanding value when compared to local clubs  and clubs across the Carolinas.  By the time of the  completion of Phase III, the Club will have made over $12,000,000 in improvements since 2017

Will there be additional membership fee increases?
Club history supports minimizing membership fee increases.  As mentioned, fees have not increased in 10 ½ years, and there has not been a building fund since 2008.  Additionally, range fees have not increased in 14 ½ years, and cart fees have not increased in over 13 years.  Each year the Club will evaluate items such as but not limited to inflation, number of members, level of service, overall facility conditions, and membership demand when determining membership fees.  As an example, inflation expenses for the Club are now budgeted at over $2,500,000 a year.  Every 2% of inflation could result in $50,000 in yearly expense increases. 

Why build the new Clubhouse now?
The goal is to be in the new Clubhouse in the first half of 2023.  At that time, the Club will have been through approximately 6 years of renovations.  The Board of Directors have worked hard to keep fees down by completing the overall project in phases.  However, the Board has determined the time has come to begin the clubhouse project.  The Club is “busting at the seams” in all areas and has exceeded 120 families on the waiting list

There are valid concerns over building cost increases.  While there are hopes building costs will come down soon or at least during the project, forecasting these costs over the next two years is nearly impossible.  What the Board does know is interest rates are near historic lows.  The Board wants to act swiftly to provide favorable financing.  Choosing a bank and obtaining financing will happen in short order once building prices are finalized.  Building prices are to be finalized in April.     

What are the current goals and mission of the Club?
For nearly a decade, the Club has stated a mission of providing value throughout the Club.  By increasing value not only in golf, but in food & beverage, a variety of social opportunities, and through the new pool, Club membership is now more attractive to a broader range of those in the community and region. 

In golf operations the Club has budgeted wisely to continue increasing the maintenance budget.  This year’s budget’s largest increases are in payroll for grounds maintenance.  The Club budgeted hiring additional staff to concentrate on detail work and beautification in the next few months.  The crew has worked tirelessly on deferred maintenance in recent years.  This year has been no exception, as you can see over the winter with the crew working on numerous drainage projects.  The Board has continued with overall course improvements including the replacement of trees, replacing old cart paths, and the construction of a new bridge.  In the coming years, you will see continued improved turf conditions, new drainage work, landscaping to enhance property beautification, further improvements in cart paths, and tree renourishment.  The goal for the golf course as stated for nearly a decade is to be a top course in the Carolinas, a course that a wide variety of golfers can enjoy day in and day out. 

Food and beverage operations have grown tremendously in recent years.  The Club’s goals are to continue to provide new offerings, building towards the new Clubhouse.  Recent growth despite setbacks from COVID-19 can be seen through food sales.  In the 2010-2011 fiscal year, food sales were $58,569.  This fiscal year's expectations are food sales to approach $325,000.  Social activities before COVID-19 were ever-expanding.  Parties' participation was routinely over 200.  This past year has been a setback, but hopefully, the Club can get back to social events in the summer.  Bands such as Liquid Pleasure have already been booked.  Under safe conditions, the Club hopes to get back to a full social calendar beginning in May. 

A large portion of membership growth, along with food and beverage gains in recent years, has come from the pool.  A new reality: last fiscal year, over 200 memberships did not play a single round of golf.  This has led to the average member today playing approximately 30% less than in the past.  The increase of new members from the pool has lowered the average membership age from 65 in 2013 to 60 years of age today.  The pool, once an afterthought, has become a thriving point of business for the Club.  You will see continued pool improvements with additional umbrellas, chairs, personnel, and implementation of a new sound system in 2021

Does the Club have plans on reducing membership?
Membership is based on rounds of golf and overall club activity.  This past year the Club had a much higher demand for golf than years past.  Current full membership has a number of grandfathered members who did not play golf this past year.  The Club expects for some of these members to move their membership to an afternoon golf/social membership with the rate change.  The plan currently is not to decrease overall membership, but the expectation is to decrease full membership. 

Why doesn’t everyone pay the same amount in membership dues?
Grandfathering membership dues has been a practice used for a number of years and has served the Club well.  There has been no set timetable, but every few years the Board of Directors would increase membership dues on new members.  In the past, when there was no initiation, this was a way to encourage members to stay with a club.  In essence, if they dropped their membership and wanted to rejoin, they may be subject to a higher dues rate.  Different membership categories have been adopted over the years and have led to growth in membership.  These categories are non-resident, junior, and the afternoon golf/social categories.  Giving members over the age of 70 a discount with 10 or 25 years of membership is a way to show appreciation to those members.  Consolidating dues even further is not something the Board of Directors has decided on.  However, the Board of Directors has voted to increase initiations to $5,000 for all those now looking to go on the Club’s waiting list.  With continued success, it is reasonable to assume initiations will increase. 

Are there improvements the membership can expect once the Clubhouse is complete?
During clubhouse construction, the Club would like to build a new cart barn.  The new cart barn would be used for membership bag storage along with storage for the Clubhouse.  Maintenance improvements under discussion are improvements to the maintenance building and the use of the pond by 2, 3 & 4 as an additional irrigation pond.  Further improvements to include continued sod/landscaping, tree program, drainage, irrigation, and cart path improvements.  As the course assets age, there will need to be an eye on the future to ensure top playing conditions.  Additionally, the Club intends to use the current Clubhouse as a multi-use building.  The current event space will potentially be as an exercise facility.  The remainder of the clubhouse future is not as certain.  Most likely the current grille and kitchen will stay in place.  Other rooms may be used as additional exercise rooms, game rooms, and a golf simulator could be in the Club’s future for the current Clubhouse.  Expansion in ladies room bathrooms could make room for showers.  Many have asked about tennis courts/pickleball courts.  There is an area to do both, however no plans have been put in place.


Reaching 50 foot in height the clubhouse will have a grand feel.
The low country style design with wrap around porches will surely catch your eye.

The clubhouse will provide ample views of the golf course.
Holes 9 & 18 will be located in close proximity.
From the roof area holes 8 & 16 will also be within view.

Speaking of views there will be no better place to watch those Newport River sunsets.

Members will be able to enjoy a  large patio between the clubhouse and 18th green.
Patio will be available for use daily.
Patio will also allow for overflow for large parties.
This area will be constructed to allow easy access to be tented.

Members welcome to your grand entrance.
As soon as you walk into the foyer you will see through the clubhouse to the Newport River.
The ballroom located through the double doors.
The golf shop will be located to the right of the stairs.

The ballroom/event space will allow for up to 250 participants.
The first floor formal ballroom will allow the club to hold and host a number of events from weddings to band parties.

The second floor members lounge will have a large bar area with multiple surrounding tables.
This bar expected use is to be predominantly used as an adults only lounge.

Sit at the bar or in your favorite rocking chair on the porch and watch your friends finish the 18th!
The member's lounge is meant to have a casual feel, no need for a sport jacket and dress shirt.

Locker rooms will have a number of half lockers along with showers.
Locker rooms are available for both men and women.
The locker rooms are located on the second floor.
Conceptually the new cart building will allow an area for members to store their bag and or pull/push cart.

Second floor multipurpose restaurant and seating area.
The restaurant is to be open daily.
Conceptually a large pocket door will be able to divide the room.
By dividing the room the club will have options for smaller member bookings.
At the same time this gives those wanting to hold a meeting or to play cards a place to convene.

Rooftop lounge will be the place to be!
The rooftop lounge is destined to be a spot talked about throughout the county and state!
Three sets of stairs and two elevators will be available for the rooftop area.
Members will primarily use a large elevator to go to the rooftop area. 
The primary passenger elevator has the ability to transport 15 or more members at a time.
An additional service elevator will assist the staff in providing daily food and for special events.

Outside of the rooftop bar, sit by the fire with your favorite drink and enjoy the sunset.
Enjoy a meal outdoors on a summer evening.
Listen to your favorite local artist play live music.
Watch your friends try to navigate the 9th & 18th holes.

So many opportunities to enjoy, this will be a spot like no other!

PGA Junior Golf League – Registration Now Open – Glencoe Golf Club

PGA Jr. League brings family and friends together around fun, team golf.
Play on teams with friends, wear numbered jerseys and compete in a two-person scramble format.
Open to boys and girls, ages 13 and under, of all skill levels and backgrounds.

Morehead City Country Club is happy to announce that this summer the club will be offering programming for PGA Junior League.
Instruction/practices will be held on Thursdays at 4pm.

PGA Junior League will start in June 3rd and run through the summer.
A minimum of 10 instruction/practices plus matches.
Signups for junior league will run through May.

Those looking to sign up for individual practices will have the opportunity to do so for $10.
To participate in matches children must register through PGA.
Fee for matches $15.

From the beginning of the pandemic, MCCC has been monitoring all Federal, State and local guidance
on maintaining a safe workplace for our employees and members and have been following such guidance diligently.  
Employees must maintain social distance, wear masks, wash their hands and monitor their health on a daily basis.  
Capacity at the club has been reduced to a level below the guidelines required by the State of North Carolina.
Cleaning of public areas within the club occur on a regular basis in accordance with CDC recommended guidelines.  
Members are notified and encouraged to wear masks at all times while on the premises
and to maintain social distance between other members and staff and to frequently wash their hands.
  Such notices are posted throughout the club as required by all regulatory guidelines.
  The notices also inform the members that they should NOT enter the club premises should they have a fever,
or exhibit other symptoms that may indicate they have COVID.  Members should also not enter the club if
they believe they may have been in close contact with anyone suspected of being infected with COVID-19.
Close contact is spending 15 cumulative minutes or more within 6 feet of an infectious person,
regardless of if they are wearing a mask. Close contact is also any physical contact for any length of time.
As of March 4th no staff member of MCCC is currently positive for COVID nor are any exhibiting symptoms of it.
  As with any business, church, restaurant, retail store or other operation in Carteret County, it is almost a certainty
that someone has entered the facility that may have had COVID.  CDC and regulatory agencies advise that once an individual
knows they are infected, they should notify individuals that they have been in close contact with and quarantine. 
Recently, MCCC has been notified that a member(s) may have had COVID while at the club and this was
investigated with staff and appropriate actions were taken by the club in accordance with all regulatory guidelines.
MCCC is prohibited by law from disclosing any health information on a member and will rely upon the affected
member(s) to notify possible contacts as set out in the CDC guidelines.
We recommend that if a member has questions about our procedures or possible COVID exposure,
that they call and speak with the General Manager to avoid unintentional and inaccurate misinformation.
  Social Media or hearsay can often cause the dissemination of inaccurate or completely false information.
  Also remember that MCCC is prohibited by law from revealing specific medical information about staff or members
to other members but we will strive to provide the most accurate information we can in accordance with
current regulation on this serious issue.   
Unfortunately, we are still dealing with the pandemic and ultimately
each member has to decide for themselves whether they feel safe spending time at the club. 

As a small business and as a golf course, MCCC is one of the few allowable locations members can socially
distance to get away from the uncertainties of today’s events and enjoy the fellowship of other members.
  Hopefully, if the membership will follow the guidelines, and we as a club, diligently follow all mandated requirements,
we will be able to continue to offer a safe place for our membership to relax in these uncertain times. 
And be advised that if circumstances warrant, we will adjust our operations and policies to ensure all staff and members are protected.
