A new year often signals a fresh start; a new beginning.  The staff at Pediatric Therapeutics agrees with that philosophy and chooses to share a few personal 2017 resolutions.  Some are practical, some are idealistic, some are functional and ALL are achievable.  Perhaps your idea of celebrating 2017 includes trying something new:  a new way to challenge yourself through exercise, organization, dietary changes or just plain adventure.  Whatever YOUR dreams and aspirations, we hope this year brings peace, joy, good health and great memories.

Happy New Year!
Anne and Sheila

Resolutions mean different things to different people. They are as diverse as each one of us. Here's just a small sampling of what our staff is endeavoring to achieve for ourselves this year. Perhaps some will sound familiar while others may simply inspire one to try something new.
The Zones of Regulation, a curriculum designed to foster self-regulation and emotional control by Leah Kuypers, has become a regularly attended group at Pediatric Therapeutics. Geared toward helping students gain skills in consciously regulating their actions, this leads to increased control and problem solving abilities. Using a cognitive behavior approach, the curriculum's learning activities are designed to help students recognize when they are in different states called "zones," with each of four zones represented by a different color. Students explore various calming techniques, cognitive strategies, and sensory supports to provide them with a toolbox of methods to use to move between zones. Although not a new offering in this new year, there is a new group starting on January 25th, running for 8 weeks. Please contact Elizabeth Duffy, OTR or Missy Briody, MS, OTR for availability or further information.

QUESTION OF THE MONTH
Each month, the staff of Pediatric Therapeutics will answer a
question asked by parents, professionals or patients.

This month’s query is: Mealtimes with my picky eater can be so stressful.  Does feeding therapy really work?

The short answer is YES!  The longer answer is yes, but it takes time, patience and consistency.

OUTDOOR WINTER PROGRAMS

Winter is a wonderful season for outdoor fun. There are plenty of local options for all family members with some exceptional programs for those of differing ability or those requiring additional assistance. Want to try something new? Here are just a few of the many choices for activities that can be enjoyed in the colder weather by enthusiasts and novices alike!
  • Mountain Creek Ski Resort in Vernon NJ has 45 trails for skiers and snowboarders of all ages. They also have the Mountain Creek Drop Zone Snow Tubing Park with more than 30 lanes of fun for everyone.
  • Adaptive Sports Foundation at Windham Mountain in Windham, NY has the largest adaptive ski and snowboarding program in the Northeast.
  • Stride Adaptive Sports at Catamount Mountain in Hillsdale, NY boasts adaptive sports programs including skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ski racing and sled hockey just to name a few.
  • Newport Skates in Jersey City, NJ is a 7000 square foot rink that is open during the winter months for those choosing to ice skate right next to the Hudson River with a beautiful view of Manhattan.
  • Clary Anderson Arena in Montclair, NJ has fun and excitement for the whole family including skating lessons and even hosting birthday parties.
  • Mennen Sports Arena in Morristown, NJ is a full service ice center with year round skating including public sessions and many different performance shows to entertain those of any age.
  • Looking for something different than outdoor sports? Try your hand at Maple Sugaring at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township, NJ. This month you can learn how to identify and tap maple trees and make syrup over a wood-fired evaporator. Taste testing of syrups also included!
Of course if the weather outside is frightful, there are tons of indoor water parks and drop in play places to choose from too!
