Keynote Speakers:

 Dr. Mark H. TuszynskiMark H. Tuszynski, MD, PhD (UC San Diego): Dr. Tuszynski seeks to gain a greater understanding of the role of neurotrophic factors in axonal growth and cell survival in the intact and injured adult central nervous system. A major area of research in Dr. Tuszyniski’s laboratory is the investigation of combinatorial therapeutic strategies, including cellular transplantation and growth factor administration, to enhance axonal plasticity and regeneration after acute and chronic SCI.

Ravi Bellamkonda, PhD (Georgia Tech): Dr. Bellamkonda’s research interests lie at the intersection of biomaterials and nanotechnology as applied to the nervous system including peripheral and central nerve repair, brain tumor therapy and neural interfacing. Dr. Bellamkonda has special research interest in the convergence of neuroprosthetics, regenerative medicine & rehabilitation.

Plenary Speaker:

Dr. Christine MummeryChristine Mummery, PhD (Leiden University Medical Center): Dr. Mummery’s primary research interest is in the the development and use of stem cells in cardiovascular development and disease.

Dr. Thomas RandoDr. Thomas Rando, AR3T Principal Investigator, Director of the VA Palo Alto RR&D Center and Professor at Stanford University

Dr. Rando’s laboratory has research interest in muscle stem cell biology, muscle stem cell aging , muscular dystrophies, tissue engineering (artificial scaffolds, regenerative therapies) and basic muscle cell biology.

Wyss-Coray and Rando A New Muscle-Brain Axis Underlying the Cognitive Benefits of Physical Activity

The objective of this grant is to test the provocative hypothesis that "there are factors secreted by muscle that promote neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity to maintain cognitive function and that these factors are increased by muscle activity during exercise ("exercise factors”)."
