Welcome to the Little Red Racing newsletter!

Happy New Year everyone and welcome to my newsletter!  I’ll be sending this out on a regular basis to update you on all things Little Red Racing - sponsors, media, new projects, race plans and results, plus any other tidbits of information that I think you may find interesting.

It is hard to believe another year has come and gone. 2015 was a wonderful season. After coming back from my broken femur in 2014, I felt as though I got stronger and stronger, culminating in my 7th place finish at the Ironman World Championships in October, my first Ironman win, a 70.3 win and 5 podium finishes.  I was extremely grateful for the support of my team - my coaches, Matt Dixon and Paul Buick of Purplepatch Fitness, my strength trainer, body worker, PT, chiro, nutritionist - as well as my family, friends, and of course, my sponsors.  None of this is possible without the the help of so many.

In addition to a great season of racing, we gained some great traction across media formats and in particular in non-triathlon-related media outlets. I was featured on a 4-part docu-series on Universal Sports, "From Two Packs to a Six Pack". The documentary shared my story of Wall Street banker and smoker turned pro triathlete as well as the struggles, triumphs, sacrifices and passion required to compete at the professional level. I was featured in an ESPNW article to talk about my journey to professional athlete as well as the launch of The Habit Project. Finally, I participated on Fox Sports Court to discuss the 50 Women to Kona movement. All of these provided some great exposure and coverage for my sponsors.

After Ironman Western Australia in December I took 5 weeks off and largely shut things down. It was a great break. I went to Aspen to visit family, where I did some back-country alpine ski touring and snow biking.  I spent Christmas in Madison, Wisconsin where I attended my first-ever Badger game. I slept in, watched movies and relaxed. I have now returned, completely refreshed and excited to get back to work.

I’m currently full steam back into training. It is always a bit demoralizing to go from the best shape of your life to feeling completely out of shape, but my motto right now is “just do the work”. It is about putting my head down, completing each session while focusing on form and technique, and then making sure I am getting sleep and taking care of my body.

This year I will be racing a little less, with a focus on developing myself as an athlete - improving my swim technique and speed, building strength and handling skills on the bike, and creating strength, power and turnover on my run. We have a lot of work in store, and are leaving ample room for significant training blocks to bring me into each race in a strong place. I plan to return to New Orleans 70.3 and Ironman Western Australia to defend my titles. I will also be racing at the North American Ironman Championships in The Woodlands, TX in May. Finally, I am thrilled to have already confirmed and validated my spot for Kona 2016. Check out my full race schedule here.

On January 25th I leave for a 2.5-week training camp in Kona, Hawaii with the other Purplepatch Fitness pros. It is one of the highlights of my season - the opportunity to train on the Ironman World Championship course and build a tremendous platform of fitness.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions and will look forward to checking in soon!

Until next time - Don’t Dream it.  Be it.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of recovery and a good night's sleep to optimizing training and race performance.  With this in mind, I was so excited to begin working with BEAR Mattress at the end of 2015. I can say, without a doubt  I have NEVER slept as well or as consistently as I have since I started sleeping on my BEAR Mattress. I've been overwhelmed by the quality of sleep as well as the reduction of things like night sweats that can come with heavy training loads.

Since I started working with Saucony a few years ago, California has been in a serious drought, and I've barely trained in inclement weather. This winter is WAY different! Earlier this week our team went out for a 90 minute run in torrential rain. Aside from the drought relief, the upside of all this wet weather is that I've been able to test out my Saucony all-weather gear.
My go-to winter weather gear: the Sonic Reflex Jacket is water resistant and breathable, so I stay comfortable. The Ride 8 GTX shoes are waterproof helping to keep my feet dry while running through puddles. Check out Saucony's online site for gear to keep you moving during these winter months!

LRR TIP: Just Do the Work

The start of the New Year is a great time for setting goals, forward thinking and developing some great new habits. But while dreaming about what we hope to achieve in the coming year is a great start, setting the wheels in motion, gaining momentum, and then committing the mind and body to the hard work needed to achieve those dreams is another story.
Personally, after a big break in training, I’ve returned to “work” feeling refreshed and mentally ready to make my dreams a reality. However, my personal reality right now is that each and every training session - even on the lightest of days - feels like a huge effort. I’m completely out of shape, and in my given state, achieving my lofty goals seems daunting! I’ve jokingly thought during a few rides “how can I even call myself a pro athlete?!?!”, and I’ve wondered how just 6 short weeks ago I was able to run a marathon at the end of an Ironman at a 6:50 min/mi pace, whereas now I am struggling to run for 50 minutes at an 8 min/mi pace.
Dreams aren’t handed to us. We set big goals because we want to push ourselves to new levels and break down boundaries. My personal motto is “just do the work”. And right now, as the new year starts and as we all look towards pushing ourselves in new ways, every time you want to give up, remind yourself to “just do the work” in front of you. It doesn't have to be pretty or perfect but continuing to put one foot in front of the other will yield results. Here's to dreams being achieved in 2016 and the hard work you’ll have done to get there!
