Garver at a Glance:
This month we celebrate the 10 year anniversary of our favorite ice cream maker, Calliope, and look forward to new rejuvenation opportunities of Spring.

Speaking of new beginnings, we're hosting a job fair on Sunday, March 28th featuring several Garver and neighborhood-based businesses. Learn about  employment opportunities and enjoy a complimentary drink ticket.

March is loaded with experiences at Garver from 90's cover-bands to Irish folk performances and from thread journaling to brunch cocktail classes.  Check out our newsletter calendar below, our on-site calendar above the directory sign OR follow us on Facebook for details about upcoming events.

Garver will continue to follow guidance from the experts at Public Health Madison & Dane County and will no longer require face coverings in our public indoor spaces at this time. Covid policies may vary at individual businesses within Garver and we encourage you to contact them directly with questions.
Happy 10th Birthday Calliope Ice Cream

Celebrating their 10th year in business, we sat down with Staci at Calliope Ice Cream to learn more about their story.

Where did the name "Calliope" come from?

The name came from us just sitting around brainstorming names. We were thinking of incorporating "Madison" somewhere in the name (e.g. Madtown Ice Cream) but that seemed a little boring. Then Jason (the founder) came up with the word Calliope and then we looked up to see whether CalliopeIceCream.com was available and it was. Ta-da! The name was born. We thought it was a fun word with the potential for fun imagery, and since it's ice cream we really didn't want to take it too seriously!

How do you develop your flavors of ice cream?

For most of my small batch flavors I'm not following anyone's recipe but instead am coming up with my own based on past flavors (what proportions worked or didn't work), how I'd like the final texture (lots of chunks or no chunks at all), can I find the ingredients locally or do I need to send away for them. And then if the first batch doesn't come out exactly how I want it, I start over.  The last flavor that was introduced in pints took over two years to come to fruition from start to finish. It was quite a long time from the initial 8 pint recipe that then got scaled up to 1200 pints -- it was the Chocolate Crispy Rice Treat. That's one reason we don't come out with many new flavors in pints.

What flavored ice cream are currently available at Garver?

Up in the case right now is Coffee & Donuts, NessAlla Kombucha Sorbet, Pina Colada Ice Cream, and Pink Champagne Sorbet. I'm making more Coffee & Donuts today, since that's a popular flavor, and then I'm going to attempt a Tamarind Tajin Ice Cream. Speaking of things that don't have a recipe!! Wish me luck!
