Well, that escalated quickly.

This is not really what I meant by becoming a "hospice worker."

Steve and I went to a Bernie Sanders event in the Saint Paul RiverCentre the evening before Super Tuesday. I had not attended a campaign rally since the primary season of 2008. The energy was similar to Obama's crowd back then. It was refreshing to watch people speaking about meaningful policies for the working classes, and acting as a community toward a common good, instead of the dog-eat-dog reality we inhabit. The current path is unsustainable, but change is scary, and not enough people are ready for a paradigm shift.

The environment and the economy will eventually force it upon us.

Bernie Sanders Rally

Before everything started shutting down due to the COVID-19/Coronavirus, I had the chance to participate as an extra in a student film project. Aside from being a great opportunity to get out of the office for a while, it provides some additional justification for my huge (mostly cheap and thrifted) wardrobe.

Extra at the Lexington

I look forward to doing it again, if I make it through the pandemic.

In the meantime...

The Dark Knight

Decidedly NOT the Queen of Quarantine.

I am actually handling isolation better than this video implies. The main issue has been the return of chronic insomnia. I need a lot of activity and exercise to sleep well. There is not a home routine — given that I do not have money or space for an elliptical machine, like I had in Texas — that will wear me out like a good gym session or having a physical day job. This unfortunately fell about the same time that I finished recuperating from the last year of CNA-type work, and I was trying to establish a schedule for getting back into the gym. I am restless, literally, but it is minor in the grand scheme of things.

My friends Mark, Root, and I, have decided together to wrap up our five-year COMIC BROS podcast after forty episodes. We have already had a partial loss of the 2020 convention season, and I anticipate a total loss of 2020. I have cancelled all my own plans except for the small local show in the fall, if it goes forward. I am keeping the podcast's archives available online, rolled into my existing accounts, as most of our topics are not especially time-sensitive. We have also struggled to co-ordinate our schedules, and suffered from technical problems. The whole world is in a state of upheaval, and it felt like the right time to move on. We may have rare "update" episodes in the future.

A gentle reminder for everyone that follows my work: As a general rule, I do not accept commissions. The only exceptions to this are my sketchcards, and I will consider requests from long-time subscribers to my Patreon account. In the last few weeks I have turned down a handful of requests, and while I do understand I am somewhat of an aberration in this regard, that is my choice. I intensely dislike feeling like an "art dispenser," especially when being asked to draw other people's Intellectual Property. This is compounded by the fact that in some cases, collectors seem to feel that a pile of cash entitles them to whatever they want. With my Patreon subscribers, and individuals who have been following my work for years, I at least feel that the buyer is invested in me as an artist, and a whole human being. Otherwise, I prefer simply having a day job if, and when, it is necessary. There are other artists who are happy to accept unsolicited requests, and I refer customers to them when possible. We all have different boundaries and needs with regards to our art.

Additionally, I will not be accepting any advance payments for commission or custom artwork until the threat of COVID-19 has satisfactorily passed. This is to protect both myself and the buyer in the event of illness, or worse.

There are difficult times coming. I will do my best to keep shining.
